It is with particular joy that on the day of the second anniversary of the enthronement of His Eminence Archbishop Calinic as Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuților, the young and already prestigious Crimca publishing house has published the book The Trilogy of the Word - sermons on Sundays throughout the year, This work is published in the context of the 2022 Holy Year, proclaimed by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church as The Ecumenical Year of Prayer in the Life of the Church and the Christian, a book that has come to the support of the ministers of the Holy Altars in particular, but also in order to give those who are eager to meet the Savior Jesus Christ through the word.
When a new book appears, it creates a „universe” which he is taking small but sure steps to unravel its mysteries. This new book, which already occupies a special place in the List of published books by His Eminence the Most Reverend Father Calinic (more than 85 volumes), wishes, from a doctrinal point of view, to show that Church a „used two methods: oratory and the written word”.
What is particularly striking from the start is the title of the book The Trilogy of the Word - sermons on Sundays throughout the year.
Etymologically, the concept of trilogy is used to name a series composed of three works by the same author which, due to certain particularities, is considered a unit. And in this case a unit divided into three sections, which correspond to the three periods of the church year, namely the period Penticostar, period Octoihului and period Triod.
It is therefore a collection of sermons for the whole church year. Etymologically, in Greek, the word Sermon means proclaiming. In a general sense this is speech that involves instruction and the dissemination of certain knowledge. The sermon is given, it is delivered by someone who believes in his words and his idea.
The art of preaching is called Homiletics. Homiletics is similar, in a certain way, to Rhetoric of old, which in antiquity was a matter of great honor to many enlightened minds of the time. The content of the homiletics differs essentially from that of Rhetoric. While Rhetoric aimed to win court cases or simply to make nice speeches, often in public squares, Homiletics aims to impart Christian teachings to the listeners and to stir their will to good deeds for salvation.
What attracts attention from the beginning is the fact that, in order to support the readers and to create a framework as conducive as possible to the understanding of the information presented, His Eminence Calinic, with a true pedagogical tact, attaches to each sermon the text of the Gospel pericope that is the subject of analysis, thus facilitating access to the scriptural text, urging the reader to read the Holy Scriptures.
With this volume, which contains 58 sermons, His Eminence the Most Reverend Father Calinic joins the line of great biblical teachers who have published books of sermons focused on the analysis of the scriptural text. .
Leafing through the more than 320 pages of this book, the words of Cicero, also called prince of orators who said the following in his own verse: „Nothing seems more beautiful to me than to captivate by the power of the word the attention of an assembly, to delight the minds of the hearers and to determine their wills... What is more pleasing to the mind or to the ear than a speech adorned with wise ideas and choice words and polished with care?”.
These sermons that are now seeing the light of day in the prestigious Crimca Publishing House, prove in particular that the author follows a logical thread, which falls into the genre of the thematic homily and that he has a systematic plan of exposition, even if it is invisible, discreet and „ atipic”.
Before concluding, we also note the exceptional form in which the volume has been typeset: durable cover, with an iconographic fragment taken from the fresco of the Church of St. M. M. Mc. Gheorghe of the Monastery of St. John the New of Sucedava, a church that this year celebrates the 500th anniversary of its consecration, good visibility of the text, with appropriate spacing and alignments, etc.
Thank you for the fact that on this anniversary, His Eminence the Most Reverend Father Calinic, offered us such a useful book, wishing us good health, many years and good luck in writing and printing other books, which we know he has in preparation.
