National contest of commentaries on the Great Canon for lay people - „The Canon of Remorse”

With the aim of intensifying personal, family and community prayer, as well as to encourage participation in the liturgical life during the Lenten period, from March 15 to April 17, 2022, with the blessing of His All-His Eminence Calinic, the Archdiocese of Suceva and Rădăuților, through the Cultural Sector, Publishing and Printing Sector and the Media and Communication Sector, in partnership with the Suceava County School Inspectorate and the „George Tofan” House of the Didactic Body, organizes the National Contest of commentaries on the Great Canon, for lay people, the Canon of Remorse, in the context of the declaration of the year 2022 in the Romanian Patriarchate as Homennial Year of Prayer in the life of the Church and the Christian and Commemorative year of the holy hermits Simeon the New Theologian, Gregory Palamas and Paisias of Neamt.

All those interested are invited to consult Competition rules (published within/continuing this material) which contains all the necessary information on how to enter the competition, as well as other details about the award ceremony.

Regulation:

  • The contest is addressed to young and adult lay people and aims to encourage the participation of the faithful in the liturgical life of the Church, the knowledge and understanding of liturgical hymns in general and the Canon of Tears of St. Andrew Chrysostom in particular, impressive by their literary beauty and spiritual depth;

(*The Great Canon is a canon of repentance, a long liturgical hymn, made up of 9 rich hymns, composed in turn of short penitential sung hymns (over 250), rhythmed by the invocation „Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me!”.)

  • The competition is divided into three age categories: youth (16-24 years old); young adults (25-34 years old); adults (over 35 years old), in two sections.

- the spiritual and theological value of the Great Canon;

- the aesthetic, liturgical, literary and cultural value of the hymn-monument of Eastern Christian hymnography;

  • participants will enter in the contest their own texts, of at least 3 pages, commenting on the canon of repentance of St. Andrew Chrysostom, drawing on their own liturgical and spiritual experience, patristic and exegetical literature (respecting copyright);
  • General formatting requirements: page size - A4; font - Times New Roman,12, 1.5 line spacing; margins - top, bottom, left, right, 2 cm; diacritics are mandatory;
  • materials will be sent to the organizers at ceredeev.daniela@isj.sv.edu.ro, by 15.04.2022; the application form must be completed and sent on the same day;

  • The jury will be composed of priests and professors, theology and literature specialists, literary critics, the honorary president of the committee being His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuților;
  • in the evaluation of the papers will be assessed: fidelity to the teaching of faith; personal perspective on the interpretation of the liturgical poem; quality of bibliographical references;
  • The results of the competition will be announced in Shining Week;
  • The award-winning commentaries will be published by the Crimca Publishing House of the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuților, in a dedicated volume, which will be launched on July 4, 2022, on the feast day of St. Andrew the Cretan.
