A true confession of faith of their devotion to the country's patron saint, the entire undertaking reflects both a heightened concern for the relics at the time and the obvious concern to give them the ritual display they deserved, by building a true sanctuary to house and showcase them. The installation of the canopy and the decoration of the adjacent portion of the wall with scenes relating explicitly to the history and sanctity of the relics suggest a deliberate plan to create a liturgical space, a veritable \u201erelic program\u201d if you will, to facilitate and control access to the shrine for the faithful. The ultimate aim of the undertaking was to relaunch their veneration at their new destination following the transfer in 1589.
