With the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, and under the guidance of the Pastoral Mission and Christian Affairs Department of the Diocesan Center – Suceava, meetings of the pastoral circles were held in November in all the deaneries of the diocese.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 1
„Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr”

On November 26, 2024, at the „Resurrection of the Lord” Church in the city of Suceava, with Father Irimia Dumitru of the Suceava I Deanery officiating, with the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, a meeting of the priests from Pastoral Circle No. 1 was held. The circle is under the patronage of „Saint M. the Martyr Dimitrios,” coordinated by Father Adrian Duţuc.

The pastoral group’s meeting began with the recitation of the daily Akathist, followed by a lecture on the topic „Caring for the Sick as a Moral Duty and a Blessing” by Rev. Dumitru Irimia.

We quote the following points from the presentation:

„This paper explores the priest’s responsibility in caring for the sick, not only as a moral act, but also as an opportunity to offer a blessing, drawing on biblical parables and teachings, such as those in Matthew 25:34–46 and Matthew 10:7–8.”.

The priest is called to combine moral duty with his pastoral mission, following the example of Christ and the guidance of the Bible. His main responsibilities include: 

– The Administration of the Holy Sacraments: Confession, Communion, and Anointing, which play an essential role in the healing of the soul and the spirit. 

– Pastoral care: ”Serving the sick is part of the law of Christian love, and the priest has a duty to approach this responsibility with seriousness and compassion.”.

Following the discussions, the following points were highlighted:

– Principles and guidelines for priests in caring for the sick:

– Building a relationship of trust: The priest should avoid any signs of sadness or discouragement and be a source of moral support and friendship for the sick. 

– Choosing the right time to visit: It is essential not to visit patients either too often or too rarely, ensuring a balance between their spiritual needs and their comfort.

– Response to emergencies: The priest must be prepared to give absolute priority to cases of spiritual emergency, administering the Sacraments promptly. 

– Proper preparation: In critical situations, the priest must be equipped with everything necessary to celebrate the services (vestments, books, Holy Communion).  „The priest should be aware that when he is called urgently to the bedside of the sick, he can have no other priority.”

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 2
„Saint Andrew the Apostle”

On November 5, 2024, at St. Basil – Burdujeni, in the city of Suceava, led by Father Dumitru Hirghiligiu of the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, a meeting of the priests from Pastoral Circle No. 2 took place. The circle is placed under the patronage of „St. Andrew the Apostle” and is coordinated by Father Gheorghe Husarciuc.

The pastoral group’s meeting began with the recitation of the Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God and prayers for the blessing of the faithful, followed by a lecture on the topic „The Pedagogy of Suffering” by Rev. Dumitru Hirghiligiu.

From the presentation we quote the following points:

„From the very beginning of his existence, man has been driven by a strong desire to understand the reality around him.

This quest for knowledge is described as „the only light” that can guide a person on their journey toward the meaning of life.

However, the text highlights a fundamental paradox: as humans learn more, they become increasingly aware of their limitations and fragility.

The image of the divine seed implanted in humankind symbolizes the ontological purpose of the human being—to attain likeness to its Creator.

This idea is supported by the fact that human beings were created with the ability to communicate and relate to God, as well as with free will, which allows them to choose between good and evil. According to Christian tradition, suffering has its origin in Adam’s sin of disobedience to the divine command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Saint Maximus the Confessor explains that this tree was meant to be contemplated spiritually, not physically consumed. The moment man physically ate the fruit, he lost divine grace and gained knowledge of evil, thus becoming vulnerable to suffering. Saint Gregory of Nyssa adds that suffering arose from an act of man’s irresponsible curiosity. Man tasted evil through his free will, and this brought death into the world. Thus, suffering becomes an inevitable condition of human existence, caused by man’s free will and excessive self-love. The text concludes that the origin of evil is not in God, but in man’s free choice, as he prefers to live only in the fleeting present, without regard for the spiritual consequences of his actions.”

            Following the discussions, the following points were highlighted:>

1. Suffering—a means of purification and spiritual rebirth

 Although suffering is initially seen as an evil, God can transform it into a means of purification and spiritual rebirth. In the Christian tradition, suffering is never meaningless; rather, it is used by God for the good of the human soul.

2. Suffering in Today's Secularized World

         In contemporary society, suffering is often perceived as meaningless, and people try to avoid it by any means necessary.

In the Church, suffering occupies a central place, and prayer for the health and salvation of the suffering person is an expression of solidarity and love for one’s neighbor.

3. Conclusions: Suffering—A Path to Perfection

          Suffering is not a divine punishment, but an opportunity for spiritual growth. By accepting suffering and transforming it into a life lesson, a person can achieve spiritual fulfillment and communion with God.

The purpose of suffering is described as the attainment of a higher wisdom and an authentic relationship with the Creator. Thus, suffering becomes a path to perfection and supreme fulfillment.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 3
„The Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel”

On November 28, 2024, at the Ipotesti I Parish,  pastored by Father Bobu Constantin, of the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, a meeting of the priests from Pastoral Circle No. 3 took place. The circle is dedicated to „Saints Michael and Gabriel the Archangels” and is coordinated by Father Mitu Pascal.

The pastoral group’s meeting began with the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Unction, followed by a lecture on the topic „Religious Life and Artificial Intelligence”, by the parish priest.

From the presentation we quote the following points:

„The topic raises three fundamental issues: religion and religious life, artificial intelligence, and the interaction between them. The text aims to analyze how these elements influence one another and to offer perspectives on the use of technology in the service of humanity and God.

Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist emphasizes the importance of life as a divine gift with these words: „You, little children, are from God, and you have overcome those prophets, for the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Religion is seen as a spiritual guide, and the divine commandments are fundamental to maintaining a moral life.”.

Following the discussions, the following points were highlighted:

1. Artificial intelligence (AI) is defined as the technology of the future, with the capacity to profoundly transform human life. It is described as a machine’s ability to mimic human functions such as reasoning, learning, and creativity. However, the text draws attention to a danger: the lack of a spiritual dimension. AI is becoming an essential tool in modern society, simplifying numerous human activities—from online shopping to home automation. Nevertheless, there is a risk of this technology being misused, which could lead to the manipulation of information, the development of autonomous weapons, and other forms of abuse.

The example of the Internet is brought up to illustrate the rapid evolution of technology. Originally conceived as a means of military communication, the Internet has become indispensable in everyday life, connecting billions of people. The text emphasizes that technology is neither good nor bad in and of itself—what matters is how it is used: „Whether good or bad things happen depends on the user.”.

2. The intersection of religion and technology is inevitable in the modern world. The text highlights the fact that the Church has begun to use AI and technology in various ways, such as streaming services online, installing sound systems in places of worship, and using social media to spread the Christian message. However, there is a risk that authentic religiosity will be replaced by a superficial spirituality, in which personal participation in worship is reduced or even eliminated. One specific example mentioned is the launch of an AI-generated religious service in Germany, which raises serious questions about the future of religion in the digital age.
3. The text concludes that technology and religion need not be antagonistic, but rather complementary. An ethical use of artificial intelligence is possible, one that supports religious values and contributes to the common good. Technical progress does not automatically guarantee moral progress, but it can become a useful tool if used with discernment. Attention is drawn to the risk that excessive technological development could lead to spiritual alienation. Therefore, it is essential that people remain grounded in moral and religious values while using technology responsibly.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 4
„Saint Seraphim of Sarov”

On November 25, 2024, at the Dumbraveni V Parish, led by Father Ioniță Vasile, in the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, a meeting of the priests from Pastoral Circle No. 4 took place. The circle is dedicated to „Saint Seraphim of Sarov” and is coordinated by Father Chelba Constantin.

The pastoral circle’s activities began with the celebration of the Service of the Blessing of Water and the Sacrament of Holy Unction, followed by a lecture on the topic of „The Family of the Suffering Person: Between Involvement and Abandonment” , by the parish priest.

From the presentation we quote the following points:

„The Romanian Patriarchate has proclaimed 2024 as the „Commemorative Year of Pastoral Care and Care for the Sick,” emphasizing the need to intensify our care for those who are suffering. The text appeals to the moral responsibility of each of us to stand by the sick and to help alleviate their suffering. Suffering is not an abstract concept, but belongs to a specific person, to someone who is experiencing it. In this sense, every person will at some point go through such an experience, whether as a patient or as a supporter of a loved one who is suffering. Caring for those who suffer thus becomes a way through which God asks us to show love and compassion.        

    Following the discussions, the following points were highlighted:

1. The family is the most important source of support for people who are suffering. It is emphasized that the pressure of responsibilities can become overwhelming, but it is essential that family members not lose hope or confidence that what they are doing is right and necessary.

The story of the Venerable Paisios of Mount Athos illustrates the power of prayer and unconditional love in the face of suffering. The family must remain united and offer emotional and physical support to the one in distress, which contributes not only to the healing of the body but also to the balance of the soul. It is emphasized that harmony within the family is crucial to providing genuine support. Only a united family, based on love and understanding, can effectively support a suffering member.

2. The Holy Fathers urge us to treat our neighbor with the same love and compassion that we would wish to receive in similar situations: *„We are one body in Christ”* (Rom. 12:5). This analogy highlights the deep bond that should exist among the members of a community and, in particular, among the members of a family. In the context of chronic illnesses or conditions requiring long-term care, physical closeness and moral support become essential. The Venerable Paisios of Mount Athos states: *„When you are in pain, you think of another’s pain; you put yourself in their shoes, and you feel even more pain for them. Pain helps you understand the pain of others.”* This exhortation underscores the need for genuine empathy.
3. One sad issue highlighted in the text is that of elderly and sick people being abandoned in hospitals or nursing homes, without the emotional support of their families. Many people spend their final moments alone, without the comfort provided by the presence of their loved ones.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 5
„Saint Nectarius”

On November 12, 2024, at the Dealu Parish, led by Father Cîrlan Constantin, in the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, a meeting of the priests from Pastoral-Missionary Circle No. 5 took place. The circle is dedicated to „Saint Nectarius” and is coordinated by Father Nichitean Constantin.

The pastoral group’s meeting began with the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Unction, followed by a lecture on the topic „The Therapeutic Role of the Church in Healing People from Passions” by the parish priest. 

From the presentation we quote the following points:

In order to speak about the Church as a spiritual hospital and about its therapeutic role in healing people of their passions, we must first refer to Christianity, and then to the Christian person. For „Christianity addresses the person. It does not address the nation, because the nation possesses a hypostatic, self-contained consciousness. But human persons are not abstract units, stripped of all determining factors and, therefore, entirely identical.”

Every person’s nature comes from God, but it passes through the medium of a past accumulated in their earthly parents, and this path is integrated into the act of their formation in the image that exists in Heaven. From the very first moment of its existence, the self bears the marks imprinted upon it by the history of its ancestors. (Fr. Prof. DUMITRU STĂNILOAE, Published by the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți, 2011, p. 5).”.

Following the discussions, the following points were highlighted:

1. The church is a holy place, a place blessed with the endless light of faith and love, where people gather in the hope of healing—first of the soul, then of the body—from pain, anxiety, fear, and restraint. It is the family where everyone can give of themselves, uniting in thought, prayer, and love with all those who, at any given moment, find themselves in the same place..
2. Christian anthropology teaches that man was created in the image of God, and his purpose on this earth is to become, through all that he is, all that he does, and all that he thinks, like Him. Thus, we can affirm that human beings, through their own experiences stemming from the nature with which they were endowed at birth, seek and find their foundation in God.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 6
„Saint Stephen the Great”

On November 12, 2024, at the Costâna Parish in Suceava County, led by Father Ionel Meldrihan of the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, a meeting of the priests from Pastoral Circle No. 6 took place. The circle is dedicated to ”Saint Stephen the Great” and is coordinated by Father Marius Davidoaia.

The pastoral group’s meeting began with the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Unction, followed by a lecture on the topic ,, ”Faith in Suffering" by the parish priest.

From the presentation we quote the following points:

„Throughout history, philosophers, theologians, doctors, and ordinary people have sought to unravel the mystery of suffering, to understand its meaning, and to find ways to alleviate it. Suffering, as an inevitable reality of human existence, raises profound questions about the meaning of life, the purpose of pain, and humanity’s relationship with the divine. In their search for answers, people have discovered that true comfort and healing come through faith and a personal relationship with God.”.

Following the discussions, the following points were highlighted:

1. Patristic literature shows that suffering is not a simple phenomenon, but a complex one with multiple manifestations. Two main types of suffering can be distinguished: physical suffering– results from illness, pain, or accidents that affect the body. It is the most obvious form of suffering, but not always the most profound, and emotional suffering – can be far more heart-wrenching than physical pain, manifesting itself in feelings of dissatisfaction, loneliness, guilt, sadness, or depression. It profoundly affects the human spirit, sometimes leading to a loss of hope and a sense of purpose in life.
2. Faith plays an essential role in alleviating suffering. In the face of life’s hardships, faith gives people the strength to endure, to hope, and to find peace of mind. St. Paul the Apostle defines faith as „the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1), thus showing that it transcends material reality and is grounded in the hope of eternal life.
3. Biblical examples of faith in the face of suffering include Abraham and the sacrifice of his son, and Job, the symbol of patience in suffering.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 7
„Saint Cyprian”

On November 14, 2024, at the Stamate Parish, led by Father Chira Cosmin of the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, a meeting of the priests from Pastoral Circle No. 7 took place. The circle is dedicated to ”Saint Cyprian” and is coordinated by Father Cobzaru Andrei-Alin.

The pastoral group’s meeting began with the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Unction, followed by a lecture on the topic „The Holy Healers as Models of Compassionate Priests and Friends of the Sick” by the parish priest.

From the presentation we quote the following points:

„The Church has named Cosmas and Damian of Arabia, Cosmas and Damian of Asia Minor, Cyril and John, Talaleus, Panteleimon, Hermolaeus, and many others. These saints were models of love, compassion, and selflessness, preaching the Gospel and healing the sick without asking for payment. Out of love for God and for people, they offered relief to those in suffering, heeding the Savior’s command: „Freely you have received; freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

Following the discussions, the following points were highlighted:

1. 1. These great healing saints did not rely solely on prescribed medicines, but on fervent prayer and strong faith. Through the power of their faith, the sick were healed, and the souls of those who were suffering were strengthened. They not only preached the faith but also lived it authentically, serving as living examples of God’s work on earth.
2. St. Basil the Great, one of the Church’s great luminaries, calls medicine an „art,” but emphasizes that true healing comes from God. The faithful physician is one who combines medical knowledge with prayer, serving as an instrument through which God works to bring about healing.
3. The Holy Unmercenary Healers and Christian doctors who carry out their mission with love and faith are living examples of God’s work on earth. Through prayer, faith, and medical knowledge, these servants of life bring relief to the bodies and souls of those who are suffering. The Church teaches us that true healing comes from God, and faithful doctors are instruments of divine grace.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 1
„St. Metropolitan Dosoftei”

On Sunday, October 8, 2023, the „St. M. Mc. Gheorghe” Parish in Sadova I hosted a special liturgical and cultural event. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Eminence Teodosie, Archbishop of Tomis, together with His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, and His Grace Damaschin Dorneanul, Bishop- Vicar of the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți. The clergy also included most of the priests from Pastoral Circle No. 1, „St. Metropolitan Dosoftei,” in Câmpulung Moldovenesc, a circle coordinated by Rev. Dr. Macar Ilie.

The event was held to commemorate a worthy son of the village of Sadova, Irineu Crăciunaș Suceveanul, who served as Vicar Bishop of the Archdiocese of Iași from 1968 to 1973. In this context, during his sermon, His Eminence Teodosie recounted his personal encounter with Bishop Irineu Crăciunaș during his studies at the Seminary of Neamț Monastery, recalling the qualities and virtues with which he was endowed.

Next, Archimandrite Dosoftei Dijmărescu, cultural exarch of the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți, presented and launched four volumes dedicated to Bishop Irineu, which cover the life, work, and reminiscences of the Bukovinian hierarch. These volumes were published by the Crimca Publishing House of the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți, with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Calinic, through the efforts of the monks at Putna Monastery, and with financial support from the State Secretariat for Religious Denominations.

His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, also took the floor, recalling the four volumes dedicated to the commemorated hierarch, which bring together the works of Bishop Irineu as well as recollections from those who knew him.

At the end, the parish priest, Horga Iustinian Irineu, thanked the bishops for the blessing and spiritual joy they had brought to the community and for their initiative to commemorate Bishop Irineu, a native of the village of Sadova.

We would also like to mention that the concelebrating priest at the host parish, Father Ionescu Ionuț, participated in the commemoration of Bishop Irineu, which took place in Iași on October 5 and 6, 2023. For the first volume dedicated to Bishop Irineu, *Evocări și predici* (Memories and Sermons), published by Crimca, Suceava, 2023, Father Ionescu Ionuț contributed an article titled „Bădiță, cui ne lași?” (pp. 111–116), in which he recounted memories of Bishop Irineu preserved in his family’s memory.

In addition, the coordinator of the regional pastoral circle, Father Dr. Macar Ilie, participated in the same commemoration in Iași, presenting a personal testimony, which is also included in the volume mentioned above, titled „To His Grace Irineu of Suceava— In memory of half a century” (pp. 107–110).

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 2
„The Romanian Saints”

On the eve of the feast day of the Most Venerable Mother Parascheva of Iași,  on Friday, October 13, 2023, at the „St. George” Church of the Cotârgași Parish, a new meeting of Pastoral Circle No. 2, „The Romanian Saints,” – Bistrița Valley, a circle coordinated by Father Radu Ungurean, parish priest of the Crucea Parish.

On this occasion, the priests who are part of this pastoral circle, under the leadership of the archpriest-missionary, Alexandru-Iulian Șuiu, celebrated Vespers combined with the Litia, the Service of Holy Water, and the communal Sacrament of Holy Unction, with the participation of the community’s faithful.

Following the prayer service, the parish priest, Father Sava Sergiu Vasile, stated that he would now deliver a talk with the aim of highlighting and commemorating a distinguished figure in the community, a worthy servant of the Church and the Romanian people, who was born in the village of Cotârgași: Father Vasile Gheorghiasa (December 11, 1911 – December 26, 1983).

According to information provided by his family, Priest Vasile D. Gheorghiasa was born in the village of Cotârgași, in the commune of Broșteni—then in Neamț County—on December 11, 1911, as the second of eight children born to Dumitru and Ana Gheorghiasa. He had the opportunity to receive a quality education, as his intellectual development was overseen by his uncle, Petre Ghe. Gheorghiasa, an auditor and school inspector, who took him to Târgu Neamț and enrolled him in Boys„ Elementary School No. 1. He went on to attend the ”Bishop Melchizedek„ Seminary in Ismail, from which he graduated in 1932. At the seminary, he studied diligently but also worked (becoming the barber for the seminary students) to pay for his books and part of his tuition. One afternoon, he was found studying in the wood shed (where he had gone for more peace and quiet) by the seminary’s director, Father Gala Galaction, who greatly appreciated the student’s diligence. He went on to attend the ”Carol II Royal Theological University„ in Chernivtsi, graduating in 1937. He also enrolled in the Faculty of Law in Chernivtsi, then transferred to Bucharest, where he graduated. He would have liked to become a lawyer, but his uncle, recognizing his love for the sacred and having known him since childhood, insisted that Vasile become a priest. He married Elena N. Turcu in March 1937 and was ordained; in October 1937, he was appointed parish priest of the Galu parish in Neamț County. There, he carried out a wide range of liturgical and pastoral activities. Together with the local teachers, he founded the ”Ion Mironescu” Cultural Center, where the priest held lectures for parishioners, sowing the good seed in the souls of both adults and children. He also set up a small library and a pharmacy at the Cultural Center for the students and villagers of the entire commune.

On September 16, 1941, Elena, a presbytera, gave birth to two children, Doina and Doru. Unfortunately, little Doru passed away shortly after birth. The following year, on September 27, Radu, the family’s third child, was born; he would go on to become a priest.

He was deeply involved in the lives of his parishioners and stood by those in need, especially during and after World War II. After the communist regime came to power, he suffered greatly, even though he had never been a member of any political organization. On August 31, 1949, a Securitate car pulled up at the gate of the parish house in Galu, and militiamen surrounded the house. Several of them entered the house, telling the priest that „he had to go to Piatra Neamț to make some statements.” They took him away in his shirt and cassock, believing he would return home at dusk. But he did not return until nearly four years later. After his release from communist prisons, Father Gheorghiasa was summoned to the Church Consistory and informed that he had been approved to serve as interim pastor of the Corbu parish, Toplița District, Hungarian Autonomous Region, a parish that included three churches: Corbu, Barasău, and Capu Corbului. Once he arrived in the parish, he built a brick kiln, where he fired the bricks he made himself. Also in the Corbu parish, he helped the parishioners by building them brick stoves to replace their metal ones. He crafted wooden cabinets, tables, and chairs. The church in Capu Corbului had only been built up to the walls, but with the help of the faithful, he completed the construction, and it was consecrated by Bishop Emilian Antal. In this parish, he also built a parsonage. In 1958, he was transferred to the parish of Sabasa, where he served until 1977, when he retired. There, he worked zealously to beautify and furnish the church with everything necessary. He demonstrated courage and love for God by building a new chapel and a banquet hall, establishing a new cemetery, fencing off the parish properties, and more. The priest was a consummate handyman, skilled in masonry, woodworking, carpentry, animal husbandry, and more. In his native village, he erected a monument to fallen heroes. At the school in Sabasa, he participated in the construction of the new school building, from digging the foundation to the very end. Together with the craftsmen, he plastered the walls of the classrooms as well as the exterior walls.

Throughout this time, he cares for the souls of the faithful entrusted to him by God. Through his teachings, he urges people to preserve their faith and moral dignity, and not to accept the darkness of a world without God. According to the family’s obituary, „Since a good steward was needed in the Kingdom of God, Father Vasile ascended to heaven on December 26, 1983.” He leaves behind the image of a dedicated priest, with deep faith in God, a refined education, and a great willingness to help others.

After the presentation of the paper, Father Radu Ungurean of the Crucea parish took the floor and expressed his joy that we had all witnessed the life story of a worthy priest who dedicated his life to serving the Church during very difficult times, facing all the dangers with great dignity and hope in God.

This was followed by a memorial service for the soul of Father Vasile Gheorghiasa, during which the other members of the family who have passed away were also commemorated. At the same time, the parish priest asked the priest’s daughter, Mrs. Doina—now 82 years old, a graduate of the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iași, Faculty of Letters, Department of Romanian Language – French, a teacher with a distinguished career and remarkable achievements at the schools in Ceahlău, Sabasa, and Cotârgași. Thus, with great emotion, she recalled and shared with those present her personal memories of her father, referring also to the very difficult period when the priest was unjustly investigated and imprisoned by the atheist communist regime.

At the end, the parish priest thanked the distinguished Ms. Doina, who had gone to great lengths to be present. He also thanked her for the valuable information and documents she had provided for the preparation of the report.

The faithful in attendance were anointed with holy oil during the Sacrament of Holy Unction and received a litie as a blessing.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 3
„St. Daniel the Hermit”

The priests of the „St. Daniil the Hermit” pastoral circle met on Thursday, October 19, 2023, beginning at 5:00 p.m., at the „St. Parascheva” in the Molid Parish, Vama commune. During the first part of the event, the Akathist service to St. Parascheva of Iași, the patron saint of the church, was celebrated.

After the prayer service, Parish Priest Cainar Dumitru, presented the paper he had prepared, titled „The Role of Grandparents in Shaping the Younger Generation”. From the text of the paper, we highlight the following ideas: „With the help of their grandparents, children come to understand the concept of the extended family, gain a better understanding of the past, and grasp the cycles of life. Grandparents are able to answer many of the children’s questions—usually with great patience—and these answers, drawn from experience, are helpful to the children and serve as guiding principles for them.”.

Today, grandparents are—and should be—viewed as „examples of an honest life lived for their adult children and grandchildren.” Studies in pedagogy and education highlight the special role of grandparents. When they participate in the process of upbringing and education, they pass on a cultural legacy to their grandchildren, centered on family traditions and customs, stories, prayers, memories from their own childhood, and other events they have witnessed. „The existence and effective interaction of three generations is a prerequisite for the optimal development and functioning of individuals and society, including the family.”.

After delivering his presentation, the parish priest spoke about his grandparents, to whom he owes a great deal, having learned many things from them that have been useful to him in life—both in matters of faith and in the practical aspects of running a household. He remembers them as grandparents who never missed a service and were always ready to help others.

Next, the coordinating priest welcomed Archpriest Aurel Goraș, who was present among the priests of the area. In turn, the Archpriest congratulated the parish priest on his presentation. From the Archpriest’s remarks, we note the following ideas: Old age can be lived beautifully—and that is the best way—so that one may be of service to others. The place and role of grandparents is to be involved in helping others—especially if their health permits—and to be integrated into the family. When you are a grandparent and have grandchildren, you find joy; you understand that life has meaning and fulfillment.

The conclusions of the meeting were summarized by Father Gheorghe Ianovici, president of the regional pastoral circle, who emphasized that parents play the essential role in education. However, grandparents, through their experience and kindness, can undoubtedly add value. There are situations in which grandparents want to offer advice based on their own views and the times they lived in; they tend to be more conservative and sometimes come into conflict with or fail to see eye to eye with the parents’ views. That is why balance is essential. Grandparents play an important role in preserving and passing on the teachings of the faith, as well as the national customs and traditions specific to the Romanian people.

In closing, the archpriest informed the parents in the area that on October 23 and 24 of this year, the holy relics of Saint John the New of Suceava will be brought in a procession to the Deanery of Câmpulung Moldovenesc. In this regard, he discussed the route, the scheduled stops for the faithful to venerate the relics, and organizational details.

The gathering concluded with the singing of the hymn dedicated to the Mother of God, „It Is Truly Fitting.”.

 Pastoral Circle No. 4
„The Confessors of the True Faith”

Meeting of the members of Pastoral Missionary Circle No. 4, known as „The Witnesses of the True Faith”  took place on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the „Ascension of the Lord” Church in the Gheorghițeni Parish, Dorna Arini commune. The pastoral circle is coordinated by Father Valică Mihai, Ph.D., from the „Holy Trinity” Cathedral in Vatra Dornei. The meeting was preceded by the celebration of the service The Akathist St. Parascheva of Iași, starting at 5:30 p.m.

This was followed by a brief introductory remark by the coordinating priest. Next, the parish priest, Toma Petrică, read the report titled „Saint Paraskevi, an iconic figure among the saints of God”. First, he spoke about the holiness of God, drawing on the scriptural argument from Leviticus 11:44–45. Regarding holy people, the paper stated that „A saint is a person who leads a chosen life, a person who does good and acknowledges God as the master of his or her life. A saint is an earthly person like any of us, but one who makes his soul and body a stepping stone so that God may descend and help us.” The presentation then provided information about the life of Saint Paraskevi, whose feast day is celebrated on October 14 and whose holy relics are housed in Iași, where they are venerated daily by many believers. „Beyond the incorruptibility of her body, the fragrance that surrounds it, and the warmth of her hands, there remain the unsuspected virtues and unspeakable beauties that sheshe earned through the toil of her body and by bearing the cross—and which she boldly asks of the heavenly Bridegroom for all who run to her reliquary with trust, offering him the gift of loving prayer. And the Saint responds patiently to all, sooner or later, in the name of the Savior, the Source of all goodness.”.

After the presentation, Father Valică Mihai took the floor and congratulated the parish priest for the information he had shared, which highlighted the fact that the pursuit of holiness is a priority. He went on to speak about the help that the saints offer to all who turn to them in prayer, recalling in this regard Father Eustratie of Constantinople and his work titled „On the State of Souls After Death,” which has also been translated into Romanian published by Doxologia Publishing House, Iași, 2019, from which he quoted several representative passages.

Regarding the topic of the meeting, several of the priests in attendance spoke. Father Dumitru Borgovan from the Dorna Arini Parish spoke about the pilgrimages to Iași, which annually draw an impressive number of the faithful, who thus demonstrate their love for Saint Paraskevi, from whom they seek—and many have received—help. Father Marius Magherca, from the „Holy Trinity” Cathedral in Vatra Dornei, spoke about the priests’ calling to help parishioners realize that God is the Source of holiness. The saints set out on their spiritual journey and were strengthened through the Eucharist; therefore, to be a true Christian, one must follow the saints, who placed God at the center of their concerns. He also spoke about the concept of holiness in the Old Testament and about the Holy Prophet Elisha, who performed two resurrections with God’s help.

At the end, Father Toma Petrică thanked everyone for praying together and for their interest in the presentation. The gathering concluded with the singing of the hymn „It Is Truly Meet,” dedicated to the Mother of God.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 5
„Saint Stephen the Great, Voivode”

On October 23, 2023, the „Descent of the Holy Spirit” Parish in in Coșna, hosted the monthly meeting of the priests belonging to Pastoral Circle No. 5, which is under the patronage of Saint Stephen the Great and coordinated by Father Ilie Rusu, Ph.D., of the Ciocănești Parish.

To begin with, a Te Deum service was held to give thanks for all the blessings received from God; during this prayer, the priests who make up the regional pastoral council were commemorated.

Next, Father Dănilă Claudiu Constantin, the parish priest of the host parish, delivered a presentation titled „Pastoral Ministry in Today’s World: Aging Villages, War, Immigration, Immoral Ideologies, and the Corruption of Faith,”, From which we quote: „In order to be effective in today’s context—marked by aging villages, war, immigration, immoral ideologies, and the perversion of faith—pastoral ministry must adopt an active missionary strategy, an active and comprehensive approach to mission work.”.

To maintain peace, she calls on all people—and Christians in particular—to take action: „Every Christian must be a champion of peace, just as Saint Paul urges Timothy: Justice, faith, love, and peace follow—for those who call upon the Lord with a pure heart (2 Timothy 2:22).

War is one of the most serious and troubling problems facing humanity, especially in our time. And if we seek the source of misunderstandings and conflicts among people, let us quote Saint James: Where do wars and fights among you come from? Do they not come from your desires that battle within your members? You desire and do not have; you kill and envy, and you cannot obtain what you desire; you quarrel and fight, and you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives (James 4:1–3). We must understand the Savior’s statement: All who take up the sword will perish by the sword (Matthew 26:52).

For people today, peace is the only rational option if they want life to go on. In the past, war was considered the ultimate solution to disputes. Today, we realize that war is irrational, and that a third world war would lead to total destruction.” The presentation also addressed the issue of immigration, with all its consequences—some of which have been observed in local parishes as well—including a decline in the number of young people and children, broken families, and other problems.

After the presentation, the priest coordinating the pastoral circle, Father Rusu Ilie, spoke about the dangers and challenges of the contemporary world, about the major changes we are witnessing, which endanger the Church’s pastoral ministry and call for special care, because today much is expected and demanded of the Church and its ministers. People are disoriented and in need of help. We are facing challenges unprecedented in history, an upheaval of values, the rejection of the teachings of the Gospel, and organized efforts to impose evil and lies in the name of progress and a misunderstood notion of freedom. He also spoke about the dangers posed by the role currently assigned to artificial intelligence and the risks that lie ahead in the future.

At the end, the host of the gathering, Father Dănilă Claudiu Constantin, thanked everyone for their shared prayer and counsel. The gathering concluded with the singing of the hymn dedicated to the Mother of God, „It Is Truly Meet.”.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 6
„St. Andrew the Apostle”

October 5, 2023, was a special day for most parishes in the Câmpulung Moldovenesc Deanery, serving as an occasion for prayer directed toward God, on the occasion of World Education Day, with priests celebrating the Divine Liturgy, attended by children, parents, and teachers from the communities. At the „Sts. Peter and Paul the Apostles” Parish in Panaci, the Holy and Divine Liturgy was celebrated by priests who are members of Pastoral Missionary Circle No. 6, under the patronage of Saint Andrew the Apostle, under the leadership of the missionary archpriest, Father Alexandru-Iulian Șuiu, with Father Ovidiu Petrovici serving as host; he is also the coordinator of the regional pastoral circle.

After the Divine Liturgy, Father Verdeșescu Buzilă Sandu, parish priest at the Dârmoxa parish and teacher at the Panaci Middle School, gave a presentation „The Importance of Religious Education in the Family and at School,”, From which we note the following ideas: „The power of education does not arise on its own. It stems from the sources from which it draws its nourishment. Christian education draws its nourishment from ancient writings, values, knowledge, practices, and ideals. Its goals are impressive; they concern life itself. The wise King Solomon offers students of all ages the following advice: Hold fast to the teaching and do not forsake it; guard it, for it is your life. (Proverbs 4:13). Instruction is light; it is a fountain of life and brings knowledge (Proverbs 6:23). If it were possible, it should be purchased: Gather truth and do not sell it; gather wisdom, knowledge, and sound judgment (Proverbs 23:23).” „In religion classes, teaching materials serve not only an informative function—facilitating the transmission of knowledge—but also a formative function; they support cognitive processes, sensitize the soul, and cultivate a sense of balance and beauty.”.

Next, the parish priest, Petrovici Ovidiu, read the report prepared for the monthly meeting of the pastoral circle, in which he spoke about „Father Haralambie Lostun—a learned pastor and a self-sacrificing servant of the Church”. Based on the known biographical details about Father Haralambie Lostun, the report noted the following: He was born in Panaci on February 6, 1897, to Ilie and Irina Lostun, simple and devout farmers. From an early age, he showed an interest in the faith and a love of learning. He attended the Seminary in Neamț, then the Faculty of Letters, History, and Philosophy in Chernivtsi (1923–1928), followed by a scholarship in Chișinău and another in Strasbourg, in France, studies that culminated in the defense of his doctoral dissertation on Origen and the Origenist Controversies of the 5th Century.

He was ordained a priest in 1922 and served his entire life in his native parish, Panaci, until his passing on February 7, 1987. In 1928, Metropolitan Pimen of Moldavia offered him the position of diocesan secretary and a parish in the city of Iași, in the Tătărași neighborhood, but he declined, preferring to remain in his native village, where he began construction of a new, monumental church in the summer of 1928. Interrupted several times, the construction was completed in 1940. Although built amid many difficulties, the church stands today as a testament to the unwavering determination of the parishioners as well as to Father Haralambie’s dedication. Metropolitan Visarion Puiu would come to call this church the „Cathedral of the Mountains.” Between 1967 and 1969, the church was painted by the artist Vasile Pascu. Father Haralambie Lostun made a significant contribution to the life of the Panaci community. Fluent in French and German, he managed to convince German soldiers during World War II to spare the houses, the church, and the bridge at Filimon as they retreated. By his side was always his wife, Ioana, a good homemaker who bore him four children.

Father Haralambie is remembered by those who knew him as a very worthy priest; he was highly respected and inspired many generations throughout his long ministry.  

After delivering his presentation, Father Ovidiu Petrovici thanked everyone—priests, teachers, children, and parents—for their presence and for joining in prayer.

At the end, the students were blessed, and everyone present joined in singing the hymn „It Is Truly Meet.” The gathering concluded with a fraternal agape meal, hosted by the parish.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 7
„St. Vasile of Moldovița”

On the evening of Sunday, October 29, 2023, a new meeting was held for the members of the „St. Vasile of Moldovița” Missionary-Pastoral Circle, a group coordinated by Father Negură Dan Dumitru. The event began, as scheduled, with the member priests administering the Sacrament of Holy Unction to the congregation, in the courtyard of the „Nativity of the Mother of God” Church in the Frumosu Parish, a parish led by the parish priest, Father Bodnar Cornel. At the end of the service, Missionary Archdeacon Norocel Bogdan, from the Deanery of Câmpulung Moldovenesc, delivered a sermon to the large congregation present, in which he spoke about the blessing that God pours out upon those who pray and ask for His help with faith—a blessing manifested through the following: veneration of the Holy Icons, partaking of the Body and Blood of the Savior, and receiving holy water and holy oil. Just as the sick woman was healed by touching the hem of the Savior’s garment (Luke 8:43–48)—a miracle recounted in the Gospel reading at the Divine Liturgy— the power of healing continues to flow into the Church through the Holy Sacraments and the prayers offered, as the New Testament teaches us, where we read about anointing with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5:14), the shadow of the Apostle Peter (Acts 5:15), and the handkerchiefs carried by the Apostle Paul (Acts 19:12), through which the sick were healed. All these examples serve to assure us of God’s care—as the Perfect Physician—toward us. 

After the anointing of the faithful, the second part of the gathering took place in the parish church. The parish priest, Father Cornel Bodnar, then read the text prepared for the occasion, entitled „The Holy Liturgy—the sign and experience of the New Covenant between God and humankind,”, From which we quote: „God’s love for the human being He created was so great that He decided to restore him through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ: God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). The Son of God came into the world to restore humanity and to establish a new covenant with humankind.

The center of the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ in the world is His bloody sacrifice, offered to the Father on the Cross for the salvation of the world—a sacrifice offered once for all, through all times and places (Hebrews 7:27; 9:27–28; 10:10–14, etc.). So that all generations of Christians, everywhere and throughout all time, might share in His Sacrifice and the New Covenant, the Savior ordained that, in place of the bloody sacrifice, we might have a bloodless means of renewal—the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

In place of the Old Law, sealed with the blood of animals (Exodus 24:8; Hebrews 9:20), the Savior establishes a new Law, a new Covenant, or a new Testament between God and humankind, sealed with His own Blood (Hebrews 9:11–25). The sign of this Covenant is the Body and Blood of the Lord, which, in the form of bread and wine, is continually offered to people for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life forever.

Therefore, from a doctrinal, pastoral, and missionary perspective, we must make ourselves and the faithful aware of the importance of participating in and experiencing the Liturgical Sacrifice as a condition for salvation: unless you drink My Blood and eat My Body, you will not have eternal life within you ”(John 6:53).”.

The presentation was followed by remarks from the priests in attendance, who expressed their views on the meeting’s topic, and congratulating the presenting priest for his presentation, which was delivered in a highly catechetical and well-structured manner; his talk also reflected the experience of a long-serving priest with a wonderful pastoral ministry.

At the end, the regional group coordinator, Father Negură Dan Dumitru, wrapped up the meeting, thanking everyone present for their participation and the interest they showed in the pastoral group’s monthly activities.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 8
„St. Spyridon”

On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, a new meeting of the „St. Spyridon” pastoral circle took place in the Fundu Moldovei area – Izvoarele Sucevei, a group coordinated by Father Horga Alexandru, parish priest at the Breaza II parish.

According to the announced schedule, at the „Soborul Sfinților Apostoli” Church of the Pârâul Negrii Parish, in the commune of Breaza, the priests of the regional pastoral circle celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Unction, presided over by the protopope missionary priest, Alexandru-Iulian Șuiu.

Next, the parish priest, Ștefan Balabasciuc, delivered the presentation he had prepared for the occasion, titled „Challenges and Opportunities in Pastoral Care for the Elderly,”, From which we quote the following ideas, inspired by a message from His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel: „Ever since the apostolic era, the Church has cared for the elderly, considering them not a burden, but a true source of blessing. What we teach is what we have received from „the Lord, the God of our fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’ (Exodus 3:15). God’s blessing through the elderly toward the younger generation is most authentically realized through their participation in the proper upbringing of young people, as they plant within them the seeds that spring from „the root of wisdom that never perishes” (The Book of the Wisdom of Solomon 3:15).

Christian philanthropy has addressed the needs of the elderly not merely as a matter of social welfare, but has always emphasized the spiritual importance of honoring the elderly as living treasures of experience, patience, perseverance, moderation, and wisdom—accumulated over the course of a lifetime and, in turn, received from previous generations.

Younger generations must not overlook the true communion within the Church among different generations: children, youth, adults, and the elderly. The entire Christian community is united on the path toward the one Kingdom of God. A breakdown in communion between generations is foreign to Orthodox spirituality.”.

Parents from the regional pastoral circle then took the floor.

The coordinating priest congratulated the parish priest on the substantial presentation. In conclusion, following several topics dedicated to pastoral care and care for the elderly—discussed at the regional pastoral circle meetings in 2023— it can be stated that the elderly are deeply attached to Christian values and the Orthodox Church of their ancestors; they participate in liturgical life and support church projects. At the same time, as they grow older, they also feel the need for assistance. Therefore, the Church, through its clergy and members, is called to find ways to provide pastoral care, encouragement, and social and philanthropic assistance to those in need or facing difficulties.

At the end, the parish priest thanked the priests for the blessing and joy they brought to the parish community in the hamlet of Pârâul Brezii—a small, aging community that is always focused on God. The gathering concluded with the singing of the hymn „It Is Truly Meet,” dedicated to the Mother of God, and with the anointing of the faithful in attendance.

With the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, and under the guidance of the Department of Pastoral Mission and Christian Affairs of the Diocesan Center – Suceava, meetings of the pastoral circles were held in June in all the deaneries of the diocese.

Pastoral Circle No. 1

„Saint Leontius of Rădăuți”

On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, a meeting was held for the members of Pastoral Missionary Circle No. 1, under the patronage of Saint Leontius of Rădăuți. The meeting was preceded by the performance of the Vespers service, in the church parish The Nativity of the Virgin Mary from The City of Rădăuți.

Following the celebration of Vespers, a meditation entitled: „”The Current Attitudes of Older Adults Toward the Priest and the Church” and was presented by Parish Priest Ioan-Florin Mateiciuc from the aforementioned parish.

From the meditation, we highlight the following points:

Most dictionaries define the elderly person solely in terms of their personal relationship with time and their biological functions. The Holy Scriptures and patristic writings, however, define and highlight the elderly person in his personal relationship with God—his Creator. For us Christians, old age does not mean the first steps toward the grave but the first steps toward eternity. Through His coming into the world, Christ frees man from the burden of time; the years are no longer a burden but are God’s blessing for man.

The elderly are our first teachers. „Grandchildren are the crown of the elderly, and parents are the pride of their children,”, as Holy Scripture tells us (Proverbs 17:6). A child’s first teachers are their grandparents. With emotion and unblemished faith, grandparents teach their grandchildren their first prayer. With great tenderness, they take the little one’s hand and make the sign of the Holy Cross. Then they join their hands in the morning, in the evening, and before meals; they teach them to say prayers. In this way, the little Christians draw on the warmth and faith in God of their grandparents. Next comes First Communion, and at age 7, First Confession. This religious education that the elderly pass on to their grandchildren shows us the close bond they have with the priest and the Church, in accordance with the scriptural exhortation: „Teach a young person the way they should go; even when they grow old, they will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6).

The elderly are a model of prayer. The elders’ prayer is simple, spoken with faith at all the important moments of their lives. They pray and teach those around them to pray as well—in the morning and evening, at mealtimes, at the beginning and end of work, but especially prays earnestly and fervently in the holy church. They know that in prayer they first praise God, give thanks to Him for everything, and only then ask for what they need: „Until I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me” (Psalm 70:19).

It is in prayer that the elderly truly reveal their attitude toward the priest and the Church, which serve as their most precious source of support during the difficult years of old age. The elderly are more fervent and wise in prayer, not only because of their age and life experience, but also because of their stronger and more active faith: „Do not disregard the words of the elderly, for they, too, learned from their parents. For from them you will learn the wisdom and skill to respond appropriately when needed.” (The Book of the Wisdom of Jesus, son of Sirach 8:9).

The lives of the elderly shed light on the hierarchy of human values, help us see the continuity of generations, and beautifully demonstrate the interdependence of the people and God. The Church is the place where different generations are called to share in God’s plan of love. Our elders are the ones who, through their faith, respect, and devotion to the Church and the priest, truly preserve the spirituality and tradition of the places where they were born.

The discussions were led by coordinating priest Angel Prelipcean and archpriest-missionary George Mironescu. Among the topics discussed were the following: methods for attracting young people to the Church; showing due respect to the elderly; and applying the advice of the elders in pastoral ministry. 

Based on the discussions on this topic, we note several proposals and best practices for the smooth functioning of the Church:

1. We would do well to learn to wholeheartedly accept the changes that nature imposes upon us. Youth has its own beauty, just as old age does. If we lived in a meditative, peaceful, and tranquil way, old age would acquire a grandeur all its own. Just as the snow-capped peaks of tall, majestic mountains are so beautiful, so too does the white hair of an elderly person have its own beauty. The elderly person is wise, dignified, burdened by the weight of the years but also by the sweet burden of joy, wisdom, faith, and truth.
2. The elderly, through their wisdom and faith, serve as role models for the faithful. They attend all religious services. If we enter a church during a religious service, we see that most of the people there are elderly. Their faith and love for the ancestral church are evident in their regular participation in services and parish activities.
3. Parish Council and parish council They are mostly made up of older people who are spiritually and emotionally attached to the parish, serving as a direct link between the priest and the faithful. They are familiar with parish life and its needs; they know the faithful personally and have many relatives in the community, thus assisting the priest in his pastoral work. Their attachment to the priest and the church is also expressed through administrative activities: collecting donations and contributions, distributing calendars, organizing fundraisers for disaster victims or the needy, etc.

At the end of the meeting, thanks and congratulations were extended to Father Florin Mateiciuc for preparing the report and organizing the meeting, as well as to the other priests for their participation.

He noted,

Pastoral Circle No. 2

„Saint John Jacob of Hozeva”

The priests of Pastoral Missionary Circle No. 2, under the patronage of Saint John Jacob of Hozeva and coordinated by Father Bogdan Lupaștean-Barfă, gathered for a working meeting on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at The Parish Saint Elijah the Prophet, in the commune of Dărmănești, Rădăuți Deanery.

Before the presentation of the report, the parents performed The Akathist of Saint Elijah the Tishbite – the patron saint of the church and parish of Dărmănești II. The meditation entitled „The Wisdom of the Elders and Its Application in Pastoral Care”, was presented by Father Mihai Cobziuc, Parish Priest, diocesan advisor in the Office for Relations with Minorities of the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți.

From the text of the meditation, we quote the following points:

Saint Paul the Apostle offers us an ideal portrait of the elderly when he instructs his disciple, Timothy, on the essentials of pastoral care: „Older men should be sober-minded, dignified, of sound judgment, and strong in faith, love, and endurance; and the older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to much wine, but teachers of what is good, so that they may teach the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, and to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited.” (Titus 2:2–5).

It is well known that not all elderly people attain that particular wisdom: „Wisdom should not be judged by age, nor should an old man be recognized by his white hair,” he says Saint John Chrysostom^[1]. The education one receives—or the self-education one undertakes on one’s own—instills in each person’s soul and life a set of values and virtues, starting from childhood: „Those who have been raised in a bad way of life, such as the elderly, are hard to change, though it is not impossible, for if they wish, they too can change. Young people, however, who do not yet have life experience, will readily accept all the laws.”^[2]A life lived in accordance with God’s will allows these things to bear fruit, and then we can speak of „a fruitful old age” or of beautiful elders.

Orthodox spirituality holds guidance in high esteem on the path to salvation: „Whoever wishes to be saved must set out on a journey”. The first advisor is, of course, the spiritual father. He is „the man who, through the mortification of the passions and the dispassion he attains, becomes knowledgeable about divine matters and possesses a sound judgment regarding human affairs, by virtue of which, without any danger to himself, knows how to guide others on the path of God.”^[3] The Sacrament of Confession It is the place where we make a good start, through the forgiveness of sins, through the power of grace, but also through the value of the advice received from our spiritual father. There is also a non-sacramental spiritual fatherhood, which does not involve the Sacrament of Holy Orders. We can also seek advice from other „authorized” individuals—spiritual people who are advanced on the path to perfection. Especially in times of unrest and confusion, people seek counsel and prayer far and wide. The Paterikon presents a series of great counselors who had not received the Sacrament of Holy Orders but who possessed „words of great power.”.

To meet the spiritual needs of the elderly, it is necessary to understand them through effective communication and a high degree of availability on the part of the minister of the Lord. Involvement in liturgical life, through the sacred services and especially through the Divine Liturgy, Confession, and the Anointing of the Sick, is essential. „I don’t think there is any particular way for the Church to tell the elderly that it loves them other than by giving them Christ,” says Father Constantin Necula. By striving to apply the advice of these individuals to our own lives, we are already rich: „It is not the one who possesses much who is rich, but the one who needs nothing. For what good is it to one who possesses the whole world but lives in greater sorrow than one who has nothing? Inner peace is what makes people rich or poor, not the possession of money or the lack thereof.”^[4]

The ensuing discussions on the topic were led by Father Bogdan Lupaștean—the group’s coordinator—and by Archdeacon George Mironescu. During these discussions, several aspects were highlighted regarding specific projects in which elderly parishioners could be involved: the church choir; publications, literary works, personal testimonies, reviews, etc.

During the discussions, suggestions for best practices to ensure the smooth functioning of the Church were made, including the following:

1. When we read a book and come across a beautiful idea, we remember it, or write it down and share it in various situations, spreading our joy to others. We do the same when „the book”A person’s life is like a book: the good things we have learned from others, we pass on through one-on-one conversations or through words of wisdom. That is why, at the parish level, we can organize formal gatherings (spiritual evenings) or informal gatherings, with different target groups and objectives, in various locations—such as the church, the parish meeting room or library, or outdoors—including outdoor activities, etc. featuring guests over the age of 70 or 80—people with a certain spiritual experience who can enrich their peers with their advice.
2. The involvement of older adults in parish activities (such as participating in the church choir, cleaning and beautifying the church premises, organizing pilgrimages, etc.), we convey to them the message that they are not useless, that they still have something to offer, and that we need them. This creates an opportunity to interact with others and learn from one another. Depending on the parish’s socio-economic conditions, it might be helpful to organize remedial programs or for performance for students, by subject, utilizing retired teachers, especially for children at risk (poverty, neglect, single-parent families, etc.).
3. Editing some publications At the parish level, this could be an opportunity to engage the most creative members of the „senior” congregation: articles, studies, literary or artistic works, reviews, personal reflections, and interviews, all organized around a specific theme and reviewed by an „authorized filter”—the editorial board.

The meeting concluded with the customary expressions of appreciation and thanks directed at Father Mihai Cobziuc, the parish priest of the Church in Dărmănești II, for hosting the event, as well as to the other priests for their participation.

Pastoral Circle No. 3

„Saint Peter Movilă”

On June 9, 2023, at The Parish The Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel from the village Ciomârtan, in the village of Zamostea, Rădăuți Deanery, a meeting was held for the priests of Pastoral Missionary Circle No. 3, under the patronage of Saint Peter Movilă – Metropolitan of Kiev and coordinated by Father Cosmin Cucu.

After committing The Akathist of the Annunciation, followed by a meditation titled: „”The Advice of the Elders and Its Application in Pastoral Care” and was presented by Father Mazilu Constantin, the pastor of the church in Ciomârtan.

From the text of the meditation, we quote the following points:

In the works The Three Great Teachers and Hierarchs, Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian and John ChrysostomWe associate old age with wisdom, but not with the wisdom gained through the passage of time; rather, it is the result of the elderly person’s growing closeness to God, of an awareness of the meaning of life, and of the way we respond to God’s call, and the practice of prayer as the most worthwhile effort one can make. Thus, our Romanian people have valued old age as a repository of wisdom, of experience accumulated through successes and failures, through battles won or lost; old age not as a burden for the young, but as a blessing and an opportunity for which we must thank God and ask Him to keep them near us because we have not yet reached the fullness of their understanding.

 In ancient times, the vast majority of peoples were ruled by elders: among the Romans, for example, alongside the king there was The Senate („senex„ meaning „old man” in Latin); among the Jews, the elders of the people were part of Sanhedrin, and in ancient Greece, Sparta was ruled by The elders' advice (Gerusia). Among the Jews, the Sanhedrin was the institution recognized by the Romans, through which the people were governed, both religiously and politically. Unfortunately, the ”tradition of the elders” for the people of Israel has been and remains a stumbling block to Christ, showing us thereby that the counsel of the elders is not always correct; perfection belongs only to God or to whom He chooses to bestow it.

In the pastoral ministry of every priest, there is a dynamic, a changing relationship with God, whom he proclaims and to whom he offers the bloodless sacrifice of the Holy Liturgy, as well as a different approach toward the faithful he shepherds. Of course, this evolution is based on several factors that underpin the missionary-pastoral endeavor. One of the factors that can influence the trajectory of our ministry is our relationship with the elderly people around us.

This was followed by discussions on the topic, and recommendations for best practices to ensure the smooth functioning of the Church were made, including the following:

1. The elderly deserve respect. The wise Solomon urges us: „Listen, my sons, to your father’s instruction, and pay attention so that you may gain understanding, for I give you sound teaching; do not forsake my counsel. For I too was a son to my father, the only one, and tenderly loved by my mother (Proverbs 4:1–3).
2. Even when the elderly may not be keeping up with the times, Saint Paul tells us that we shouldn't confront them: „Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as you would a father (1 Timothy 5:1). And regarding the fact that the zeal of the young needs the experience of the older ones, Father Arsenie Papacioc left us with a maxim: If youth knew, and if old age could. When we are young and full of energy, we don’t really know what to do and need the advice of our elders, but in old age our strength wanes, yet we can still offer advice to others.
3. Grandparents and parents play a vital role in our spiritual life. We have an example of this in the mother of the Maccabees, who, while once instructing one of her sons, said: „Son, have mercy on me, who carried you in my womb for nine months and nursed you for three years, and fed you and brought you to this age and raised you, carrying you in my arms. I beg you, son, as you look to heaven and earth and see all that is in them, know that God created what was not, and likewise created the human race” (2 Maccabees 7:27–28).

The meeting concluded with words of thanks and congratulations extended to Father Constantin Mazilu for hosting the event and leading the meditation, as well as to the other priests who participated in the gathering.

Pastoral Circle No. 4

„Saint Daniel the Hermit”

On June 8, 2023, at The Parish The Healing Spring in the village of Upper Horodnic, the Deanery of Rădăuți, led by Father Grigore-Florin Vatamaniuc, a meeting was held for the priests of Pastoral Missionary Circle No. 4, under the patronage of Saint Daniel the Hermit and coordinated by Father Traian Molea.

            The meeting began with the officiating of Akathist to the Mother of God – „Joy of All Who Sorrow,”, in the parish church. This was followed by a meditation titled: „The Advice of the Elders and Its Application in Pastoral Care” and was presented by the parish priest, Florin Vatamaniuc. The paper proved to be rich in content and meticulously crafted. Here are some of the topics covered: The Lay Apostolate; Pastoral Care of the Elderly; Veneration of the Elderly; The Mindset of Young People and the Mission of Adults; The Holy Fathers and Their Legacy; Worship and Culture; Memory and Human Restoration etc.

From the content of the report, we highlight the following points:

Sometimes old age is a relative concept. Sometimes, even at 40, a person feels like a useless old man. And the opposite happens too, when some people, even at the age of 70, feel strong and healthy, just like young people. We all want to live a long life. We wish each other: „Happy Birthday! May you have a long and happy life!” and so on. In fact, there are people who really do live a long time. Moses He lived to be 120 years old. Even at the age of 120, he had the physical strength of a young man, his eyesight was still sharp, and his teeth were perfectly healthy. He had a clear mind and a strong body. The Jews have a saying that goes: „One hundred and twenty years!” It seems they both want this, without adding anything else; they simply reply: „One hundred and twenty!”

The changes brought about by aging vary from person to person. The aging process is highly individualized, involving psychological and social factors in addition to biological ones. How we experience old age depends on our personality, our physical and mental health, our life experiences, the events that have shaped our lives, and the resources available to support us^[5].

The World Health Organization estimates that by 2050, the percentage of older adults worldwide will double. In Romania, the population is steadily declining and aging. Estimates show that by 2050, one in four Romanians will be over 65, which could make us one of the oldest societies in the EU^[6].

In the address titled „Priorities in the Pastoral Care of the Elderly,” delivered by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel at the opening of the spring semiannual pastoral-missionary conference of the clergy of the Archdiocese of Bucharest (May 29–30, 2023), His Beatitude explained that the Holy Synod chose the first commemorative theme in light of the fact that „at no other time in history has there been a more aging population in Europe, not only in rural communities but also in urban ones.”^[7]. In the remainder of his address, the Patriarch identifies and elaborates on three priorities that the Church must now adopt with regard to the pastoral care of the elderly:

1. The involvement of the elderly in raising and educating children. „Through their spiritual maturity, the elderly can contribute greatly to fostering liturgical life and preserving Christian values in our culture, for the good of society and the family.”.
2. Another priority we must keep in mind is to view old age as a privilege, a time of spiritual growth and enrichment through prayer. Old age is not a burden, but a gift from God. „The prayer of the elderly is both the source of their wisdom and a blessing for the entire community.”
3. The active involvement of the elderly in the pastoral care and mission of the Church. „Unfortunately, today there are many elderly people who live in great loneliness and isolation from the community, feeling somewhat useless. But there are many elderly people who live out their old age with serenity and dignity, actively participating in the life of the Church and in helping other elderly people. The Church is called to strengthen its pastoral program regarding the elderly, to devise new and contemporary pastoral forms and methods, drawing closer to the needs and expectations of the elderly.”

The discussions were led by coordinating priest Traian Molea, assisted by missionary archpriest George Mironescu. In connection with the topic under discussion, proposals for best practices were made to ensure the smooth functioning of the Church, including the following:

1. a) The parish community possesses a diversity of ministries, charisms, gifts, and vocations that must be actively engaged to foster the spiritual growth of the faithful and to transmit the faith and authentic Christian life. The priest must be the spiritual father of all parish members equally. Young people, women, children, the elderly—all these parish groups must not only be recognized but also organized around common projects. Ways must be found to involve all these groups in the spiritual life of the parish.
2. b) We must give seniors in our parishes and the Church’s community structures the chance and opportunity to tell us what they are going through. Rebuilding our relationship with the elderly should begin with understanding the depths of their lives, communicating with them about their struggles, and identifying their spiritual and even physical wounds. On many of his visits to the parish, the priest hears about sufferings that, in people’s view, „not even Christ endured.”.
3. c) Traditional society, which we no longer have, presupposes the existence of a living, unbroken bond between generations, in which everyone needs everyone else. Life should be a harmonious unity of several generations living side by side or even together. The connections between generations are very important.

The parents were delighted to have the lawyer there Emil Ianoș, the guest of honor at the pastoral gathering. A native of the village of Iurești, in the commune of Todireni, Botoșani County, he is a retiree who has dedicated his later years to composing folk-inspired poems through which we rediscover the fascinating world of the Romanian village. Reading several poems from the volume titled „Iurești – Longing and Poetry”, author Emil Ianoș has painted a picture of village life for a long timein all its forms, from events of historical significance (the heart of the peasant family, war, deportations, etc.) to everyday scenes and experiences (children at play, grandparents, weddings, funerals, rural life). Simplicity and beauty are ever-present in his poems: people lived in the village just as they had learned from their ancestors—beautifully and peacefully, their greatest treasure remaining the earth and faith in God.

The meeting concluded with words of thanks and appreciation directed at Father Florin-Grigore Vatamaniuc, the host of the meeting at the Horodnic de Sus II Parish, and to all those who attended the pastoral circle meeting Daniil the Hermit.

Pastoral Circle No. 5

„Saint Stephen the Great, Prince of Moldavia”

On June 7, 2023, at The Parish The Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel in the village of Gălănești, the Deanery of Rădăuți, led by Father Ioan Moroșan, ... a meeting was held for the priests of Pastoral Missionary Circle No. 5, under the patronage of Saint Stephen the Great, Prince of Moldavia and coordinated by Father Florin Mihalescu.

After committing The Sacrament of Holy Unction In general, the parish priest led a meditation titled: „The Current Attitude of Older Adults Toward the Priest and the Church”. Before the lecture itself, the priest showed several videos featuring various elderly parishioners from the Gălănești parish, in which they shared their testimonies about what it means Church and the priest for them.  

From the text of the meditation, we quote the following points:

  Saint John Chrysostom He asserts that the soul grows stronger in old age; it is then that it reaches the height of its power, and it is then that it matures spiritually. In Christianity, the elderly are not worthless; on the contrary, after a life of moderation, now, in old age, their virtues shine even brighter. The elderly are our parents. They offer us spiritual nourishment that strengthens and prepares us for eternity. When we were children, we fed on bread, and now, spiritually, we too wish to reach the Land of the Heavenly Father—the Land of Our Fathers.

A book doesn’t love you, but an elderly person does; they carry you in their arms to church, they lead you to Christ. The elderly offer you a priceless treasure and leave it to you as an inheritance.

Living with Christ holds a special place in the lives of those who senior citizens. The way they relate to prayer, to the thirst for The Holy Liturgy and The Mystery The Anointing of the Sick, the tears from The Sacrament of Confession and The Light of the Eucharist, points the way to the Kingdom of Heaven.

Our elders are those who live with Christ; they teach us respect and the unbreakable bond with the Church and the local priest, preserving our ancestral spirituality and tradition intact.

            The discussion on this topic was led by Father Florin Mihalescu, the group’s coordinator, assisted by Archdeacon George Mironescu. During the discussions, several points were raised regarding the respect we must show to the elderly (our elders should be visited more often; some of the more virtuous elders can be held up as examples of people of prayer, ascetics).

            Here are a few suggestions and best practices for the smooth functioning of the Church, as discussed during the meeting:

1. „Honor your father and your mother, so that it may go well with you and that you may live long on the earth…” (Exodus 20:12). In Hebrew, „honor” means „importance” or „value.” By honoring God, the elders honor those who came before them: „Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” (Deuteronomy 5:16). Old age is the time that reveals the meaning of life and the wisdom of the heart.
2. Hustle and bustle dominate our lives, causing us to forget the fundamental questions about dignity and vocation. Senior citizens is one of simplicity and contemplation. The moral and religious values offered by those for years are a vital resource for society. In the Church, the elders teach us respect for creation, love for our people and traditions, the value of the national costume, and the bond with the community priest, as the one who brings Christ the Savior into everyone’s home and heart.
3. The attitude of the elderly toward death and the truth about the value of life, which God has instilled from the very beginning, are wisely taught by those covered with white hair. They teach us their sacred nature; they advise us that the „taboo” attitude toward death, meant to go unnoticed, is not good. The ritual of days of mourning intertwined with moments of piety will always remain a living testament to eternal remembrance.

The gathering concluded with words of thanks and congratulations for Father Ionuț Moroșan on his unique presentation of the meditation, as well as for the other priests for their participation.

With the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți, and under the guidance of the Pastoral Mission and Christian Affairs Department of the Diocesan Center – Suceava, meetings of the pastoral circles were held in January in all the deaneries of the diocese.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 1
„St. Metropolitan Dosoftei”

On the evening of January 23, 2023, at the church dedicated to „St. John the Baptist,” located on the grounds of the Fire Department in the city of Câmpulung Moldovenesc, beginning at 5:00 p.m., a new meeting of the priests from Pastoral Circle No. 1 took place, „St. Metropolitan Dosoftei,” Câmpulung Moldovenesc—a circle coordinated by Father Dr. Macar Ilie of the „St. Hierarch Nicholas” Church in the city. The program began with the celebration of the Akathist to St. Gregory the Theologian.

Following the prayer service, Father Silviu Emilian Oblezniuc, honorary priest at the aforementioned church and religion teacher at schools in the town of Frasin, delivered a presentation titled „Rediscovering the Theological and Spiritual Depth of Byzantine Hymnography”.

From the text of the paper, we quote the following:

„The liturgical hymns of the Orthodox Church have a profound theological character, for they are addressed to God, speak of God under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and their words are icons of the Word of God, Who became incarnate for the salvation of all. Their authors are melodists and hymnographers, most of whom lived during the first Christian millennium, and the majority of them are Holy Fathers of the Church.”.

„The texts of the hymns sung during the services of the Orthodox Church have a clear theological significance, expressing the teachings of the Christian faith. For example, „at the beginning of the 4th century, when the heresy of those who did not believe in the divinity of the Son was just emerging—even before Arius—the Holy and Glorified Martyr Antinogen composed the hymn Soft light; during the struggles against the Nestorian heresy, Saint Cyril of Alexandria composed the hymn Mother of God, Virgin, rejoice…; and in the midst of the struggle against the Monophysites and Origenists in the 5th century, the orthodox Emperor Justinian I composed the hymn Only-Begotten… Over time, Christian apologetic poetry (which defends the faith) has flourished in various forms: troparia, stichera, canons ”etc.".

Following the presentation, the coordinating priest congratulated Father Silviu on his exploration of the history and richness of the Orthodox Church’s hymnography. We all benefited from the material presented, which highlighted the doctrinal richness contained in the liturgical books.

Father Aurel Goraș, archpriest of the Câmpulung Moldovenesc Archpriesthood, then took the floor and praised the content of the presentation. To an outsider, the terms used in liturgical books to designate the hymns may seem like an unknown language, but for the Church, they express the richness of the liturgical tradition, developed over the centuries.

The texts contained in the liturgical books are of exceptional richness and beauty, and they must be known and passed on to the faithful. In this regard, the archpriest drew the attention of the priests present to the fact that hymnography should serve as a source of inspiration for preaching. To illustrate this point, he recalled the teaching method used by his former professor of Homiletics at the Theological Seminary of Neamț Monastery, the late Reverend Professor Vasile Ignătescu, who asked seminarians to compose thematic sermons using only the texts of the hymns contained in the liturgical books, where an inexhaustible wealth of ideas can be found. Furthermore, hymnography offers a unique interpretation of biblical narratives and a dogmatic exposition faithful to the teachings of the Orthodox Church; which is why it is very important to use hymnal texts in our sermons, especially on the occasion of the Great Feasts, but also at other liturgical events throughout the year.

Another point raised by the archpriest was that priests and church cantors must read the texts from the liturgical books as accurately as possible, because they all play an extraordinary catechetical role.

In the final part of the meeting, the coordinator of the pastoral circle, Father Dr. Macar Ilie, noted that, during the current year, the priests in the pastoral circle are invited to address 12 commemorative and celebratory topics, as determined by the Diocesan Center, in accordance with the recommendations of the Holy Synod, and presented the monthly schedule of upcoming meetings and the priests who will deliver the presentations. He also emphasized the importance of pastoral circle members attending the monthly meetings.

At the end, the priests sang the hymn dedicated to the Mother of God, „It is truly fitting.”.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 2
„The Romanian Saints”

On the afternoon of Sunday, January 29, 2023, at the „Dormition of the Mother of God” Church in the Holda Parish, a new meeting of Pastoral Circle No. 2, „The Romanian Saints” – Bistrița Valley, a circle coordinated by Father Radu Ungurean, parish priest of the Crucea Parish.

The event began with the celebration of the Great Vespers combined with the Litia, in honor of the Three Holy Hierarchs—Basil, Gregory, and John—officiated by the parish priest, Adrian Simiraș, and the retired priest, Ioan Simiraș.

Next, joined by the assembly of priests from the regional pastoral circle, under the leadership of the archpriest and missionary, Father Alexandru-Iulian Șuiu, the Service of Holy Water and the Sacrament of Holy Unction were celebrated.

After the prayer service, the host of the gathering, parish priest Adrian Simiraș, read the report prepared for this occasion, titled „Opportunities and Challenges in Pastoral Care for the Elderly”, from which we quote:

„Pastoral care for the elderly is the concern that the priest, the parish, and the family must show toward older people. Old age is characterized by a weakening of physical strength and a general decline in one’s condition. The Christian faith defines old age as an encounter with God and with oneself; it is a time for reflection. It is the period of life given by God to reap the fruits.”.

„From a pastoral perspective, old age—like the other stages of life—has its own particular characteristics, advantages—opportunities—and disadvantages—difficulties. The shepherd of souls, the priest, has a duty to attend closely and persistently to the religious life of the elderly. Their souls are just as precious in the sight of God as the souls of the young. Therefore, concern for the salvation of these souls must not be regarded as any less important than concern for the salvation of the other souls in the parish. On the contrary, from certain points of view, concern for the salvation of these souls should take precedence over the fulfillment of other pastoral duties. This is because every elderly person could close their eyes at any moment and, therefore, no longer has the time necessary to set their life aright.”.

The priest is called to pay special attention to the elderly, as they have greater needs—especially for spiritual guidance, support, and encouragement. Unfortunately, „the elderly are no longer given the attention they once received; they are often regarded as superfluous, as something obsolete, and are therefore overlooked, neglected, and even disregarded. This causes them deep spiritual dissatisfaction, bitter pain, and anxiety, which leave them no rest or comfort except through a more vital connection with God, the church, and the parish priest. The shepherd of souls is often the only person who knows how to appreciate, value, and give due attention to the elderly. All of these factors foster in the elderly person’s soul a certain favorable disposition toward the faith, toward the church, and toward the priest, and lead them to a more intense religious life.” The elderly must be treated with gentleness and love, with understanding, in accordance with the guidance given to us by the Holy Apostle Paul: Do not confront the elderly, but encourage them as you would a parent; encourage elderly women as you would a mother (1 Timothy 5:1–2).    

The conclusions of the meeting were summarized by the archpriest and missionary, Alexandru Iulian Șuiu, who addressed the faithful with a message about the importance of honoring the elderly, who, through their experience and wisdom, can serve as guides toward what is good; it is important for the younger generation to heed and follow this sound advice. He also brought to everyone’s attention a saying by Saint Basil the Great, often quoted by Father Cleopa of Sihăstria Monastery: „The greatest wisdom for a person is to reflect on death.” Preparing for the passage into eternity is most often a concern of the elderly, but it is very important for everyone, regardless of age, to remain constantly mindful and prepared.

At the end, the parish priest, Adrian Simiraș, thanked everyone present—priests and parishioners alike—for accepting the invitation to gather in the church and pray to God for all their needs.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 3
„St. Daniel the Hermit”

The priests of the „St. Daniil the Hermit” pastoral circle met on January 26, 2023, beginning at 5:00 p.m., at the „St. Peter and Paul” Church Peter and Paul” in the Gemenea Parish, Stulpicani commune. The event began with the celebration of the Akathist Hymn to Our Savior Jesus Christ.

Following the prayer service, Father Gheorghe Ianovici, coordinator of the regional pastoral circle, welcomed Archpriest Aurel Goraș to the regional pastoral circle and delivered an introductory address, drawing the attention of those present to the decision of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, dated December 16, 2021, which designated 2023 as the Year of Homage to Pastoral Care for the Elderly and the Year of Commemoration of Hymnographers and Church Singers (psalts). Accordingly, the topics to be addressed and discussed during the pastoral meetings will fall within the framework of these commemorative themes. He then invited the parish priest, Father Ordinschi Iulian—the host of the first meeting—to read the prepared paper, which addresses the first topic on the list of 12 proposed by the Diocesan Center.

Next, the parish priest, Father Iulian Ordinschi, delivered a presentation titled „Rediscovering the Theological and Spiritual Depth of Hymnography”, from which we quote:

„If the year 2022 was dedicated to prayer and Hesychasm, as a spiritual endeavor to promote the unceasing prayer of the mind and heart, this year, 2023, we focus on prayer accompanied or supported by church chant, with the chanting itself becoming communal prayer. This has its origins in the Psalms of the Old Testament, as Saint Andrew of Crete, one of the Church’s great hymnographers, affirms, saying: David, at one time, set the song to music, writing it down as if it were an iconă”.

„The hymns contained in the liturgical books of our Church are the creations of hymnographers inspired by the Holy Spirit, and they help us understand the scriptural text as part of Holy Tradition. The texts of the hymns sung during the services of the Orthodox Church deepen and explain the theological richness of the Word of God. Church music is the Gospel set to song. In this regard, Father Dumitru Stăniloae said of hymnographic language that: God is so great that only poetry can attempt to express Him. The theological and spiritual depth of the liturgical texts stems from their constant drawing upon the Holy Scriptures and the writings of the Holy Fathers of the Church, who meditated at length and deeply on the Word of God.

”The theology expressed in church hymns is one of the richest in meaning and, at the same time, one of the most enlightening for the faithful of our Church; therefore, it should be drawn upon more in sermons and catechesis.„ ”The development of Byzantine hymnography was shaped by at least four factors: the freedom granted to the Church, the emergence of heresies, the inspired nature of hymnography, and the proliferation of Christian feasts.”.

For example, a dogmatic summary (or doctrinal synthesis) of the essential events of the entire Economy of Salvation, from the Nativity and Baptism (Theophany) to the Ascension and Pentecost (the Descent of the Holy Spirit), can be found in the Stichera to „Glory… and now…” from the Matins of the Ascension: You were born as You Yourself willed; You revealed Yourself as You Yourself deemed fit; You suffered in the flesh, our God; You rose from the dead, trampling down death; You were exalted in glory, You who fulfill all things; and You sent us the divine Spirit, so that we might praise and glorify Your Divinity.

After the presentation, Archpriest Aurel Goraș congratulated Father Iulian on his presentation and invited the priests to share their views on the topic of the meeting. From the priests’ remarks, we summarize the following ideas, which focused primarily on practical aspects: the importance of the church cantor at the choir loft of every church — unfortunately, most parishes face a shortage of trained cantors; there is a lack of schools for cantors as well as clear compensation structures, so in most cases, improvise; as for hymnography, it represents a treasure of the Church, faithfully reflecting the content of the decisions of the Ecumenical Councils and Christian Orthodox teaching in general; In the Church, everything is interconnected: the Liturgy, iconography, and chant—all are part of the beauty of Orthodoxy, and therefore must be known and cultivated just as they have been handed down.

One topic that was discussed—though outside the main theme—but nonetheless important concerned a recent pastoral issue: proselytizing activities by neo-Protestant denominations in the villages of the area, and advice on identifying measures to counteract them.

At the end, the conclusions of the meeting were summarized by the archpriest, who praised the presentation given during the meeting. Building on the theme of the presentation, he spoke to the priests in attendance about the homiletic value of hymnography and advised them to use, in composing their sermons, the texts of the church hymns contained in the liturgical books, which are characterized by a clear exposition of dogmatic teachings and by fidelity to Holy Scripture and the writings of the Holy Fathers. On the other hand, there is currently a danger of introducing hymns with newer texts into the liturgy, which are popular with the public, but which do not so faithfully express the richness and beauty of the Church’s liturgical and theological tradition. For this reason, some pricesneshould be avoided or incorporated into church life.

  PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 4
„The Confessors of the True Faith”

Meeting of the members of Pastoral Missionary Circle No. 4, known as „The Witnesses of the True Faith” and coordinated by Father Mihai Valică, Ph.D., Associate Professor, of the „Holy Trinity” Cathedral in Vatra Dornei, took place on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at The Parish „The Descent of the Holy Spirit” – Argestru.  The meeting was preceded by a religious service The Akathist of the Annunciation, a liturgical text composed by Saint Roman the Melodist. Father Aurel Goraș, archpriest of the Câmpulung Moldovenesc Archpriesthood, also took part in the pastoral event.

After the service, a presentation was given on the topic: „Rediscovering the Theological and Spiritual Depth of Byzantine Hymnography”, which was presented by the parish priest, Laurențiu Paicu. As a continuation of last year, which was dedicated to prayer, this year „we must accompany prayer with church singing, for the chanting itself becomes communal prayer.” The liturgical books of the Orthodox Church contain remarkable hymns, creations of hymnographers inspired by the Holy Spirit, which help us understand the scriptural text as part of Holy Tradition.„ ”Liturgical chant supports prayer, and hymnographers are the composers of church hymns of great theological depth. The beautiful hymns we hear as we step into the church were composed by holy hymnographers. They poetically synthesized the theology and spiritual experience of Orthodoxy.”.

Among the Church’s hymnographic saints, the paper included information about Saint Roman the Melodist, Saint John of Damascus, Saint Andrew of Crete, Saint Cosmas of Maiuma, Joseph the Hymnographer, and Saint Casia (or Casiana). 

After the presentation of the paper, the regional study group coordinator, Father Valică Mihai, Ph.D., Associate Professor,congratulated the parish priest on his presentation and gave a brief overview of the doctoral dissertation by His Grace Damaschin Dorneanul, published by Crimca Publishing House of the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți. The volume serves as a reference work for the study of hymnography and for understanding the theological richness of liturgical texts.

He then invited the priests present to speak on the topic covered in the presentation. Thus, from the discussions among the participating priests, we note the following ideas: – The theme of this year’s commemorative year is a very fitting continuation of last year’s theme, because the hymnographers were also Hesychasts—people of prayer. They translated into verse and hymns not only the richness of the Church’s theology but also their own spiritual experience and understanding. That is why their work was accepted by the Church and became established in the liturgical books; – In the Orthodox Church, chant harmonizes with all aspects of the church (painting, architecture). For this reason, new hymns or songs that deviate from the hymnographic tradition inherited from the Holy Fathers should not be overly encouraged.

During the discussions, Archpriest Aurel Goraș also took the floor and expressed his joy at being present at this pastoral gathering, where a beautiful topic with practical applications for pastoral ministry was discussed, and the presentation also included a historical overview. He also spoke to the priests about the homiletic value of the hymnal texts found in liturgical books, because all the hymns possess extraordinary depth and dogmatic value, being inspired by Holy Scripture, the writings of the Holy Fathers, and the decisions of the Ecumenical Councils. Another point he raised concerned the importance of chanting from the choir loft, which contributes greatly to creating an atmosphere of prayer and an understanding of the liturgical service. Unfortunately, there are no longer any schools for cantors that provide training in this area, and there is also a lack of compensation that would serve as an incentive.

At the end, the parish priest thanked everyone for attending and participating in the discussions. The meeting concluded with the singing of the hymn „It Is Truly Fitting.”.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 5
„Saint Stephen the Great, Voivode”

On Monday afternoon, January 30, 2023, the „Nativity of the Mother of God” Parish, in the village of Botoș, Ciocănești commune, hosted the monthly meeting of the priests belonging to Pastoral Circle No. 5, under the patronage of Saint Stephen the Great and coordinated by Father Ilie Rusu, Ph.D., of the Ciocănești Parish.

On this occasion, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the parish church, members of the pastoral circle celebrated a Te Deum of thanksgiving for all the blessings received from God over the past year. During the litany of the service, the priests of the pastoral circle, along with their families and parishes, were commemorated.

After the prayer service, the parish priest, Mihai Tehanciuc, delivered the presentation he had prepared for this pastoral meeting, titled „Rediscovering the Theological and Spiritual Depth of Hymnography”, from which we quote:

„The liturgical hymns of the Orthodox Church have a profound theological and spiritual character, for they are addressed to God, speak of God, and inspire us to turn to God. The Word clothed in song can heal the wounds of the soul, can bring forth tears of joy or repentance, can transform people’s evil inclinations, can bring joy to families troubled by the power of evil, and can foster love among fellow human beings. Moreover, song gives wings to the Word, lifting it up to heaven and carrying the prayers of the children to their Father: May my prayer rise before You like incense”.

„The Church’s liturgical hymnography emerged alongside the development of the liturgical rite that took place up until the 11th century, which leads us to conclude that hymnography emerged gradually over the course of several centuries, in response to the Church’s challenges and needs. Due to doctrinal issues, we are dealing with hymnography that presents the Orthodox Church’s teaching of the faith; thus, we can say that hymnology From the outset, it had a largely dogmatic character, having been driven largely by the struggle against heretics”.

„The hymns are organized according to the three periods of the Church’s liturgical year, in the books specific to each period: the Pentecostarion, the Triodion, and the Octoechos, as well as in the hymns of the Menaion—the 12 liturgical books, one volume for each month of the year—which contain the fixed feasts and the feasts in honor of the saints. The hymns expound at length on the doctrine of the Incarnation, Life, Cross, Death, and Resurrection of the Savior. They recount the entire redemptive work of our Lord Jesus Christ, which signifies deliverance from the bondage of sin and the restoration of humanity through repentance.”.

„Hymnography has caused the Church, in its very essence, to shine, drawing it closer to the beauty of Heaven. Until the creation of man, the voices of the angels resounded everywhere like a cymbal. They vied with one another in composing melodious hymns with which to glorify the Creator unceasingly.”.

After the presentation, the coordinator of the regional pastoral circle, Father Ilie Rusu, Ph.D., praised the presentation and invited the priests in attendance to share their own thoughts on the topic. The discussions focused primarily on practical aspects related to church music, the shortage of choir singers, and the lack of training programs to prepare them, as had existed in the past (mention was made of the School for Church Singers in Chernivtsi and its graduates, who formed church choirs in the parishes of Bukovina but which, unfortunately, have since disappeared over time). Father Doroftiese Gabriel, parish priest at the Dorna Candreni Parish, choir director, and organizer of musical events in the area, recalls that Patriarch Justinian Marina, through his vision of standardizing church music across the Romanian Orthodox Church, wanted everyone in the church to sing, and for communal singing to be a means of strengthening faith and fostering involvement in liturgical life. Unfortunately, nowadays, in many cases, not even the choir sings from the „Hymns of the Divine Liturgy” anymore. That is why it is very important to pay more attention to the choir.

At the end, the parish priest, Mihai Tehanciuc, thanked the priests for joining them in this moment of shared prayer and counsel.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 6
„St. Andrew the Apostle”

Meeting of the members of Pastoral Missionary Circle No. 6, placed under the heavenly protection of Saint Andrew the Apostle, Coordinated by Father Ovidiu Petrovici, the event took place on January 19, 2023, at the „St. Parascheva” Church of the Păltiniș Parish in the village of Panaci.

The program began with the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Unction for the congregation, with local priests officiating under the leadership of the archpriest and missionary, Father Șuiu Alexandru Iulian.

The Sacrament of Holy Unction was followed by a sermon, in which the missionary priest brought to the attention of the faithful present the fact that priests from a certain area meet monthly for pastoral meetings, where they address a topic followed by discussions and counsel. Since the Romanian Patriarchate has dedicated this year to the pastoral care of the elderly, the priests’ meetings and discussions will address various topics related to this issue. In the Church, every person is important, and we ought to cherish and pray for all people. In particular, we should cherish the elderly, because they are the most regular attendees at the divine services, and we have much to learn from their example of faith—we just need to make time and listen to their advice. We, the younger generation, cannot know everything, nor should we presume to know it all; that is why it is important to seek advice and learn from the example of our elders. The elderly are closer to the Church and more regularly attend services, showing greater care for the soul, because growing older makes a person wiser, but also causes them to think more about the things to come and, above all, about their meeting with the Righteous Judge.

Next, the parish priest, Father Roman Ionel, read the report titled „The Current Attitudes of Older Adults Toward the Priest and the Church”, from which we quote:

„In the Scriptures, respect for the elderly becomes a law: In the presence of the one with white hair, stand up and fear your God (Lev. 19:23). And also: Honor your father and your mother (Deut. 5:16). A very subtle exhortation in favor of parents, especially in their old age, is found in the third chapter of Jesus Sirach (vv. 1–16), which concludes with a statement of particular gravity: He who forsakes his father is a scoundrel, and he who angers his mother is cursed by the Lord. We must strive to break the trend—so widespread today—of ignoring the elderly or marginalizing them, a trend that „teaches” new generations to abandon them: young people, adults, and the elderly all need one another.

The lives of the elderly help shed light on the scale of human values; they help us see the continuity of generations and beautifully demonstrate the interdependence of God’s people. In fact, the Church is the place where different generations are called to share in God’s plan of love through a mutual exchange of gifts, by which each is enriched through the grace of the Holy Spirit. It is an exchange in which older people bring religious and moral values that constitute a rich spiritual heritage for the life of Christian communities, families, and the world.

Religious practice plays an important role in the lives of older adults. Old age seems to foster a special openness to it. This is confirmed, among other things, by their assiduous and heartfelt participation in liturgical life (church services); the unexpected return of many elderly people who draw near to the Church after long years of estrangement; the significant space set aside for prayer, which represents a precious contribution to the spiritual capital of prayers and sacrifices from which the Church draws abundantly and which must be reevaluated within church communities and families.

The elderly in the church should bring us joy, because they are souls that have been saved—or are at least on the path to salvation, on the path to the redemption of their souls.

”In conclusion, it is our elders who, through their faith, respect, and devotion to the Church and the priest, truly preserve the spirituality and tradition of the places where they were born.".

In closing, the coordinating priest of the regional pastoral circle, Petrovici Ovidiu, addressed those present—priests and faithful alike—and presented a summary of the past commemorative year, which had been dedicated to prayer within the Romanian Patriarchate. He also commended the parish priest’s presentation, which kicked off this year’s series of pastoral meetings, during which we have a duty to be there more for the elderly, who need prayer but also need to be visited, to talk with them, and to provide them with what they need.

The pastoral circle meeting concluded with the singing of the hymn „It Is Truly Fitting.”.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 7
„St. Vasile of Moldovița”

The first meeting of 2023 for the „Saint Basil of Moldovița” pastoral circle took place on the evening of January 30 at the „Nativity of the Mother of God” Parish in Frumosu. The event began, as scheduled, with the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Unction for the congregation in the parish church, starting at 5:00 p.m., under the leadership of Archpriest Aurel Goraș, Archpriest of the Câmpulung Moldovenesc Archpriesthood.

After the celebration of the Holy Sacrament, the priest addressed the faithful with a sermon in which he spoke about the commemoration of the Three Hierarchs, Basil, Gregory, and John, whose liturgical feast is celebrated both separately and together, as this was the Saints’ wish. He spoke of the exhortation of the Holy Apostle Paul, who says: Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their lives and imitate their faith (Hebrews 13:7). He also noted that, during the Divine Liturgy, the Gospel reading from John, chapter 10, was read, in which reference was made to The Good Shepherd, who is Christ, the model for all shepherds of the Church. Unfortunately, today there are many sects that distort the faith and teach something other than what the Holy Hierarchs taught, introducing teachings foreign to Holy Scripture and the patristic teaching of the Church. For their struggle in defending and proclaiming the true faith, as great teachers and mentors of the Church, the Three Holy Hierarchs were chosen as the patron saints of the seminaries and faculties of Orthodox Theology in our country, as well as of theological education in general.

At the end of his remarks, he expressed his gratitude to Professor Emil Forfotă and the members of the „Academica” choir from Câmpulung Moldovenesc, who provided the liturgical responses from the choir loft and delighted those in attendance. He also congratulated them on the wonderful cultural work they do, thereby continuing the fine choral tradition in Bukovina.

Following the anointing of the faithful, the second part of the meeting began, during which Father Niga Nicolae, a concelebrating priest at the host parish, delivered a presentation titled „Parish Choirs and Their Importance in the Church’s Mission.” From the content of the presentation, we note the following: „Ever since its establishment, the Divine Liturgy has been a communal prayer: Let us pray in the Lord’s peace or Let us all say this with all our hearts and minds… These are calls that punctuate the order of the Divine Liturgy and involve the participation of all the faithful in prayer and singing. In a parish, it is not possible to train all the faithful who attend the Divine Services in church singing; but only a portion of them—preferably those with good voices and a musical ear—who actively exercise the community’s right to sing during the Divine Liturgy.”.

„If we are to discuss the role of the church choir in community life, we must consider its significant impact on people’s individual and, subsequently, collective development. A primary role of church choirs is missionary in nature. Every community has a church. For missionary purposes, the church is adorned with icons and beautified by the priest and the faithful. The priest strives to preach, to sing, to conduct the service beautifully, and to make God’s teaching known. The church choir was meant to complement the priest’s work. Where there is beautiful singing, people are drawn to go. The Savior’s teachings are also conveyed through song and are more easily remembered with the help of music. Choir members can be likened to the Apostles, for they preach through song. Another role is cultural. In the past, parish choirs participated in cultural events commemorating heroes and forefathers, as well as important days in the country’s history, etc.

Another role of church choirs is to foster community unity. Church choirs were what drew people to church and lent beauty and grandeur to the events. From all corners of the community, choir members would gather and form a team. They would all gather at the church. In this way, they formed a family. As a result, their families would come together and grow closer, and this led to the entire community being united and protected from division.”.

Next, regarding the topic of the meeting, the priests in attendance took the floor, and the conclusions of the meeting were summarized by Father Negură Dan Dumitru, the regional circle coordinator, who praised the paper prepared by the parish priest, in which he highlighted the importance of parish choirs for both the liturgical and cultural life of the communities of the faithful. He also commended the initiative to invite a professional choir to the pastoral circle meeting.

The meeting concluded with the singing of the hymn „It Is Truly Fitting.”.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 8
„St. Spyridon”             

On January 31, 2023, the Breaza I parish hosted another meeting of the regional pastoral circle, which is under the patronage of Saint Spyridon and coordinated by Father Alexandru Horga.

To begin with, a memorial service was held by the clergy, presided over by Archpriest Aurel Goraș, for all the priests who have served in this parish over the years. The prayer service took place in the beautiful parish church, with members of the congregation also in attendance. At the conclusion of the memorial service, Archpriest Aurel Goraș addressed those present—clergy and laity alike— a word of instruction, in which he emphasized the importance of remembering those who have passed on to the Lord, especially the spiritual fathers of each community—those who served and prayed, standing by the parishioners through all the moments of their lives. Father Petru Balabasciuc’s initiative is commendable and worthy of praise, as commemorating those who have passed from this life is also a gesture of gratitude toward our forebears, from whom we have received a rich heritage of faith. He also quoted from the service performed at the funerals of priests, where a hymn states: Remember me, the one you once knew; for many times I entered the house of God with you, and together we sang, “Hallelujah!” As we remember the priests who have gone to the Lord, we offer up this prayer.

Next, the parish priest, Alexandru Petru Balabașciuc, presented a paper titled „Pastoral Ministry in Today’s World: Aging Villages, War, Immigration, Immoral Ideologies, and the Corruption of Faith”, in which he first addressed the priestly ministry and the high pastoral responsibilities, and then the recent challenges facing rural parishes as well as Orthodox Christians in general. The presentation was structured into subchapters based on the themes suggested by the title, and the priest sought to present material that was as practical as possible and focused on the most current issues—many of which he had encountered in his own pastoral work—citing examples from his own parish. Thus, from the content of the presentation, we note a few quotes: „Until now, it was plain to see that in many Romanian villages the population has been declining from one year to the next. But now, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) has published a document that merely confirms what was already „obvious.” According to an INS list, there are villages with only one child or where the population is very elderly.”.

Over the past 23 years, Romania has not only undergone a difficult economic and political transition, but has also experienced a painful demographic decline. A declining birth rate, an aging population, and massive labor migration are some of the causes of the drastic population decline. Rural areas are by far the hardest hit. When it comes to the birth rate, the situation is even more dire. According to a Eurostat report, in 1990, 23.7% of Romania’s total population consisted of children under the age of 14. Two decades later, in 2010, the proportion of children in the total population had fallen to 15.2%. The study cited indicates that this 8.5% decrease is the fourth largest recorded during this period among European Union member states. In the Breaza I parish, over the past four years, there have been 103 funerals and only 24 baptisms.”.

As for the war taking place near our country’s borders, „The Romanian Orthodox Church has made tremendous efforts, launching an unprecedented mobilization to help all the refugees who have entered our country, especially through the Siret border crossing, where the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți, through all its departments and staff, has helped thousands of people who fled the war.”.

Following the presentation, the coordinating priest, Father Alexandru Horga, congratulated the parish priest on the presentation he had prepared and delivered, in which he presented the material in a practical way, using data gathered from many sources, as well as much information drawn from the current, immediate hardships and challenges that each person personally experiences. He also invited the priests to speak. This led to a discussion in which most of the priests participated, raising various points related to the issues highlighted in the report.

 The conclusions of the meeting were presented by Archpriest Aurel Goraș, who praised the paper as being well-written and insightful. He also commended the contributions and remarks made by the priests. Unfortunately, all the issues raised in the report and during the discussions are real and painful; our country is facing economic and demographic challenges. Furthermore, we are living in a time when there is a desire to destroy our national identity and to lead us away from the true faith by promoting ideologies that seek to overturn natural values. Our hope lies solely in the Good Lord.

The meeting concluded with the singing of the hymn „It Is Truly Fitting.”.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 1

On March 22.03.2021, at the Parish of the ”Assumption of the Mother of God„, in the city of Suceava, pastored by P.C. Father Mera Teodor Mera, of the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His All-Holy Father Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuților, was held the meeting of priests from the Pastoral-Missionary Circle I, under the patronage of ”Saint Great Martyr Dimitrie - the Fountain of Myrrh", coordinated by Fr.

The work of the Pastoral Circle began with the celebration of the Mass of Our Lady of Pantanassa, followed by a lecture on the theme „The Fulfillment/Training of the Priest Today - Discussion of the chapter from the Holy Scripture, Second Epistle to Timothy of St. Paul, I, 2-12”, by P.C. Pr. Mera Teodor.

From the presentation we quote the following points: „Permanent formation, in addition to its constant and stable character, is part of a sacramental dynamic by virtue of which the priest, through his ordination, is called „to spread the extraordinary riches of grace” contained in this gift received from God: Holy Priesthood. (...) The priest is called to discover and develop in his life this gift of God, which is offered to him so that he may be able to realize God's will in the various stages of his formation in the priesthood.

Then followed discussions on the topic and proposals for good practice for the good functioning of the Church were made, from which we note:

1. The priest who celebrates the Divine Liturgy fulfills his vocation, his own salvation and that of his faithful;
2. The close link between cultural and spiritual formation;
3. The priest's family, an open book before the faithful.

In closing, the missionary protopope Father Iustin Croitoru thanked the parish priest Father Mera Teodor for organizing the pastoral circle and the other priests and religion teachers for their participation.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 2

On 09.03.2021, at the Parish „Holy Trinity” in the city of Suceava, pastored by Father Cornel Oprișan, from the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuților, took place the meeting of priests from the Pastoral-Missionary Circle II, placed under the patronage of „St. Apostle Andrew”, coordinated by Father Husarciuc Gheorghe.

The work of the Pastoral Circle began with the celebration of the Mass of Our Lady - The Joy of All the Afflicted, followed by the homily on the theme: „Christian philanthropy - an essential activity in the life of the Church”, by P.C. Pr. Clipa Mihai Alexandru.

The Holy Fathers see in love of neighbor, especially the poor of all kinds, a second altar: the mystery of the brother, where God's love is exercised. On this statement, St. John the Evangelist draws attention when he says: If anyone says, 'I love God, and hates his brother,' he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, and God whom he hath not seen, cannot love him. (I John 4, 20-21). And St. Gregory the Theologian points to this (love of neighbor): I find its greatest strength in love for the poor and in suffering in those who are of one mind with us (...) for by nothing else is God so perfectly served as by compassion for our neighbor, for nothing is more proper to God than this; before whom goes mercy and truth (On the love of the poor - St. Gregory the Theologian; Suceava and Rădăuților Archdiocese Publishing House; Suceava, 2006, p.12)”.

Then followed discussions on the topic and proposals for good practice for the good functioning of the Church were made, from which we note:

1. Each Church is a potential social center, each priest is a potential philanthropist, so in this respect things are well structured, by the very form of organization, which took into account the word of the Savior, addressed to the Apostles, „the poor you have with you always” (John 12:8);
2. Bringing back to life the social philanthropic institutions that the Orthodox Church had in the golden age, in the time of Emperor Constantine the Great;
3. Establishment, in each parish, of working groups to assist the priest in identifying and solving social cases, in finding material support for the philanthropic mission in the parish;

In conclusion, the missionary protopope Father Iustin Croitoru thanked the parish priest Cornel Oprișan for organizing the pastoral circle and the other priests and religion teachers for their participation.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 3

On March 29, 2021, at Fetești Parish in Adâncata Commune, pastored by P.C. Father Căuneac Constantin Ovidiu, of the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His All-Holy Father Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuților, was held the meeting of priests from the Pastoral-Missionary Circle III, under the patronage of ”Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel", coordinated by Fr. Father Mitu Pascal.

The work of the Pastoral Circle began with the celebration of the Mass of the Annunciation, followed by a lecture on the theme: „The fulfillment/formation of the priest today” by P.C.Pr. Căuneac Constantin Ovidiu.

From the presentation we quote the following points: „The priesthood seeks, through the Holy Spirit, to make Christ alive in the hearts of the faithful. Spiritually caring for and guiding others is not easy; the priest must always be ready and ready to face the new challenges that society puts before him. The value of the priesthood lies in the fact that it helps the believer to move from being the image of God to being likened in God. The heaviest burden falls on the shoulders of priests.(...) In almost every church there is frequent preaching and words of instruction on every occasion, yet we seldom see anyone straightened up as a result of a sermon.”

Then followed discussions on the topic and proposals for good practice for the good functioning of the Church were made, from which we note:

1. The need to familiarize the priest in consulting theological works in the field;
2. Approaching an academic approach in dealing with topics for preaching and catechesis;
3. Maintaining a close link with today's spiritual leaders.

In conclusion, the missionary protopope Father Iustin Croitoru thanked the parish priest Father Căuneac Constantin Ovidiu for organizing the pastoral circle and the other priests and religion teachers for their participation.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 4

On March 23.03.2021, at the Parish of ”Dumbrăveni III”, Dumbrăveni, pastored by Father Nădejde Bogdan, from the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His Most Reverend Father Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuților, took place the meeting of the priests from the Pastoral-Missionary Circle no. IV, placed under the patronage of "St. Seraphim of Sarov", coordinated by Father Chelba Constantin.

The work of the Pastoral Circle began with the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Mass followed by a lecture on the theme: „Religious and patriotic celebrations, between living and formalism” by P.C. Pr. Nădedejde Bogdan.

From the presentation we quote the following points: „It is not enough to maintain an outward form of godliness, but the great question is what is in the human heart. The heart is where God looks: „...I look not as man; for man looks on the face, but the Lord looks on the heart” (I Kings 16:7). This is what Paul distinctly sets forth as the standard measure of the soul, and ”circumcision is that of the heart” (Romans 2:29). The heart is the seat of true saving faith, "for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Romans 10:10). It is the faith of the heart that leads to righteousness. True Christians are holy because their hearts are devoted to Christ. They obey from the heart, they do the will of God from the heart".

Following the discussions, the plenary proposed the following issues for realization:

1. In order to avoid formalism, spiritual life is needed in the religious setting, and a dignified and uplifting approach is required on patriotic holidays;

2. Organizing meetings with the faithful to prepare religious and patriotic events;

3. Promoting Christian Orthodox and national values at all events in the life of the parish;

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 5

On March 30.03.2021, at Berești Parish in the commune of Hănțești, pastored by P.C. Fr. Marișca Constantin, from the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His All-Holy Father Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuților, took place the meeting of the priests of the Pastoral-Missionary Circle V, under the patronage of ”St. Hierarch Nectarios Nectarios the Wonder-worker of Eghina", coordinated by Fr.

The work of the Pastoral Circle began with the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Mass, followed by the presentation of the homily on the theme: „Pastoral visits during the winter holidays - an opportunity to get to know the faithful”, by P.C. Pr. Marișca Constantin.

The presentation includes the following points: „Pastoral visits, where the priest meets the faithful of his parish, have been part of the tradition of Orthodox Christians in our country for centuries. On the occasion of these visits, a closeness is created, a spiritual bond between the priest and the faithful, because they are honored by the presence of the priest. Visitation of the faithful by the priest should be understood as a liturgical act, but also as a good way of getting to know the parishioners, with their joys and sorrows, and, where appropriate, of helping them. A short catechization (lesson, religious teaching) in the truths of faith and morals of our Christian religion is also given to each believer in the families visited.”

Following the discussions, the plenary proposed the following issues for realization:

1. The pastoral visit, a direct and effective way for the priest to get to know his parishioners;

2. Intensify visits to the homes of the faithful;

3. Applying the exhortation of St. Paul, „pray without ceasing”, the priest has a moral duty to educate his faithful, and through these visits he can materialize it in practice.

In closing, the missionary protopope Father Iustin Croitoru thanked the parish priest Marișca Constantin for organizing the pastoral circle and the other priests and religion teachers for their participation.

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 6

On 02.03.2021, at the Parish of Botoșana, shepherded by Father Spiridon Nistor, from the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His Eminence Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuților, took place the meeting of priests from the Pastoral-Missionary Circle No. VI, placed under the patronage of „St. Stephen the Great”, coordinated by Father Davidoaia Iulian.

The work of the Pastoral Circle began with the celebration of the ”Saints Archangels„, followed by a lecture on ”Christian Philanthropy" by Fr. Spiridon Nistor.

From the presentation we quote the following: „In Orthodox Christianity, philanthropy is, above all, God's love for man: God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16) or no one has greater love than this to lay his soul for his friends (John 5:13) At the origin of the creation of the universe and of man is the supreme act of boundless love. For the whole world, but also for us Christians, the Savior Jesus Christ is the supreme Philanthropist. He sacrificed himself for the world out of love, suffering death and more death on the Cross (Phil. 2,80). The Savior Himself gave us examples of philanthropy through the healings and miracles He performed. By these we see that in philanthropy  everything becomes a deed, an action that overcomes all human suffering (Iacobescu V. Ilie, article ”Christian philanthropy in the past and today" in Theological Studies, No 4, 1990, p. 106)”.

Following the discussions, the plenary proposed the following issues for realization:

1. Based on the principle of Church legislation, ”each parish priest must find the most appropriate methods to local situations, so that together with his parishioners to fulfill the work of the Samaritan of mercy"; ;

2. Implementation of social, charitable and cultural programs manifested in social canteens, medical cabinets, libraries, homes for the elderly, workshops of icons on glass, day care centers, health care centers; ;

3. To carry out actions at parish level that may include food aid programs where food and food distribution, medical clinics, educational centers, care and assistance centers for the elderly are involved; ;

PASTORAL CIRCLE NO. 7

On 04.03.2021, at Stamate Parish, pastored by Father Leucă Mihai, from the Suceava I Deanery, with the blessing of His All-Holy Father Calinic, Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuților, took place the meeting of priests from the Pastoral-Missionary Circle No. VII, under the patronage of ”Saint Cyprian", coordinated by Father Cobzaru Alin-Andrei.

The work of the Pastoral Circle began with the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Mass, followed by the presentation of the homily on the theme: „Significance and importance of the funeral mass and the parastas”, given by Fr. Leucă Mihai.

From the presentation, we quote the following: „The death of a Christian is a special event for the whole community to which he or she belonged, but especially for the family. At such times, the thought of God must overcome any grief which often turns into a feeling of despair and hopelessness. The Christian duty of others towards the dying person is that he or she should die confessed, in communion, reconciled with others and with a lighted candle at the bedside. (....) The symbolic elements of the funeral service are wine which is poured over the body of the sleeping (wine - the symbol of blood, i.e. of the life-sap that flows through the human body's marrow and gives life to it) and colivă (sign of our faith in resurrection and immortality)”

Following the discussions, the plenary proposed the following issues for realization:

1. Feasts are the remnants of the old agape or fellowship meals and therefore should not be given up;

2. Acquiring and practicing the virtues in the pastoral ministry (faith, good works, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, piety, humility, humility, patience, love);

3. The preparation of the soul and body of all Christians by observing the pravilea with responsibility and spiritual conscience;

4. Youth ministry and methods of bringing young people closer to the Church by involving them in different projects and activities in the parish.

In closing, the missionary protopope Father Iustin Croitoru thanked the parish priest Leucă Mihai for organizing the pastoral circle and the other priests and religion teachers for their participation.
